A Dream About Mario is a hack made by SuperSoupGalaxy (previously SuperJonahWorld) for the Dream Themed Level Competition, in which it placed 8th.
This hack features a number of custom mechanics in it. The camera controls have been completely revised; Mario-cam and Lakitu's close-up are no longer possible, though it is now possible to zoom the camera out much further, and to allow it to rotate freely on its x-axis. The changes to the camera were presumably done to accomodate the other significant custom mechanic, which is gravity changes. Certain areas in the courses use alternate gravity to allow Mario to walk on surfaces that would previously not have been possible, similar to the gravity mechanics used in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2.
Other changes made to SM64's base mechanics include fall damage being disabled; all Stars having their ensuing Exit Level warps removed, and some changes to enemies. The Giant Piranha Plants that are defeated for a Star now have an altered appearance and behaviour. Eye-Rok has also had their health increased, and can now sustain significantly more hits per hand.
The manner in which Mario accesses courses from the Hub world has also changed- instead, Mario can now sit on his armchair and press Z to fall asleep. This will allow him to access the menu which he can use to access the first course, and any other courses he has unlocked. This is very useful for resetting the courses in the event of a bug occuring, such as the green Star not spawning after defeating all of the Giant Piranha Plants.
Each Power Star has its own unique appearance, as does the Power Star awarded to Mario for defeating the final boss. Their colours are red; orange; yellow; green; cyan, blue; purple and pink. The final Power Star that ends the game and does not count towards the Star count is rainbow, and appears after the 8 collected Power Stars all combine together. Seven of the eight Power Stars are found in the hack's main course: SandGear Mirage. The final Star, the pink Star, can be found in the Bowser level, Hotdog Station.
Areas[]
Hub World[]
The Hub World is Mario's house, which is empty aside from two signs and a large comfy armchair. The first sign delivers the exposition for the hack, and the second sign has the credits. Mario can take a stroll outside as well. The armchair is what allows Mario to access the courses, which is done so by standing on the chair and pressing Z to fall asleep.
SandGear Mirage[]
This dreamy level has seven colourful Stars to collect. After collecting these, Mario will be warped to the next level, Hotdog Station.
Stars[]
Collect the 8 red coins around the perimeter of the level. All of them can be collected while riding the spinning platform around the edge of the world, and since there are no inertia mechanics in play, Mario can gain more accuracy by jumping to slow himself down.
Platform up the vertical spinning gears that can be reached from the ground near one of the Giant Piranha Plants. The Star is at the top of the gears on a separate platform.
This one is easily reached right after obtaining the orange Star. From that Star, run across the spinning horizontal bar, then long jump over to one of the gear teeth as it's coming up to its 5-O'clock position. As the gear spins, move to the top of the tooth and make sure to jump up to the platform before Mario is under it.
There are five giant Piranha Plants dotted around the pond at the centre of the course. These Piranha Plants are much faster than those in vanilla SM64, and shoot multiple blue fireballs at Mario in quick succession. The best way to defeat them is to jump over their initial fireball attack, then run over to where they grew from and wait for them to reappear, and then punch them. There is a chance that the Star may not spawn after killing all of the Piranha Plants; if this happens, exit the course and reenter it, and try killing all of the Piranha Plants again. The Star will spawn on top of the sunken vehicle in the pond.
This one is very easily reached after collecting the yellow Star and jumping over to the cyan towers. Alternatively, platform up the giant cube of yellow bricks from the ground. On top of this cube are a set of cyan towers- these will steadily sink the longer Mario stands on them. However, as soon as Mario is standing on something else, the towers will begin to return to their original position. Platform up the cyan towers, using the yellow platforms on the way up to reset the sinking towers as you go, until you reach the highest yellow platform. From there, jump over to the side of the highest cyan tower that has a different pattern on its side. This pattern indicates different gravity, and Mario can walk along this wall with no problem. Run up the wall and grab the cyan Star.
This Star is waiting for Mario directly next to the level's entry point, next to the giant cactus in the middle of the pond.
This Star can be obtained by defeating a familiar adversary. Head over to the red/hot pink floating pyramid that is mostly upside-down, and scale it. This is done by following the paths marked out along the pyramid's surface, which have an alternate gravity effect on them that will allow Mario to stick to them. Once at the top, awaken Eye-Rok's hot pink lookalike and do battle. This fight is functionally the same as Eye-Rok's fight in vanilla SM64, however this hack's version of the boss can take significantly more hits to bring down.
Play through the entirety of the Hotdog Station level, which Mario will be warped to after collecting all seven of the Stars available in SandGear Mirage. |
Red Star: Collect the 8 red coins around the perimeter of the level. All of them can be collected while riding the spinning platform around the edge of the world, and since there are no inertia mechanics in play, Mario can gain more accuracy by jumping to slow himself down.
Orange Star: Platform up the vertical spinning gears that can be reached from the ground near one of the Giant Piranha Plants. The Star is at the top of the gears on a separate platform.
Yellow Star: This one is easily reached right after obtaining the orange Star. From that Star, run across the spinning horizontal bar, then long jump over to one of the gear teeth as it's coming up to its 5-O'clock position. This is done by following the paths marked out along the pyramid's surface, which have an alternate gravity effect on them that will allow Mario to stick to them. This fight is functionally the same as Eye-Rok's fight in vanilla SM64, however this hack's version of the boss can take significantly more hits to bring down.
Dialogue[]
With the last Star in hand, Mario finally realized what had happened. This was never his dream at all, was it? It was the dream of a talented young man whose heart Mario had touched. With this knowledge, Mario knew he had to move on. To his own dream, and to his own world. But there was one last enemy he would have to deal with first. One who had given the streamer nightmares.
