Super Mario 64 Hacks Wiki

Arcade Fighter 64 is a ROM hack created by Kahan for the Retro Hack Competition, in which it placed 3rd.

This hack is a boss-rush style which pits Mario against the bosses found in vanilla Super Mario 64, but with a twist on each fight. Each stage takes place in a forced 2D perspective environment, and each fight between King Bob-omb and the finale includes a handicap to Mario. This handicap will inform him via dialogue at the start of each battle which of his moves he cannot use. Attempting to use that move will fail and set Mario on fire. This handicap is a result of King Bob-omb cursing Mario after being defeated by him.

Between each stage, the player will be taken to a screen that displays the icons of each boss on a tower. Mario's icon will ascend each time he makes progress, climbing higher and allowing the player to see which bosses they will be fighting next.

Bugs[]

Unfortunately, a bug commonly occurs that causes the camera to shake excessively after obtaining the first Star. It is not yet known how to avoid this occuring, but it could be a problem associated with playing on RetroArch or Parallel Launcher.

Stages[]

King Bob-omb[]

There is no handicap for this stage. Defeating King Bob-omb will lead to him cursing Mario, thus causing the handicaps for the following four stages.

King Whomp[]

The handicap for this stage prevents Mario from performing a side-flip.

Big Boo[]

Big Bully[]

The handicap for this stage prevents Mario from kicking. This area has small pools of lava at each end of the stage up a small slope, which can make it more challenging to push the Big Bully into the lava. This is because when fighting a Bully on a slope, it can be harder to judge where the hitboxes are, and whether or not Mario is close enough to land a blow.

Wiggler[]

The handicap for this stage prevents Mario from moving on the ground. He can, however, still move while in the air.

Bowser[]

There is no handicap for this stage, as King Bob-omb's curse wears off. This is the only stage to take place in 3D rather than 2D, and does not differ much from vanilla SM64's Bowser fights.
