Average Mario 46 is a ROM hack created by moony_26 (AKA Teal Moony) for the SimpleFlips' Slide Hack Competition (2024) ft. PirateSoftware, in which it placed 63rd. All of the music in this hack was composed by the hack creator.
Overview[]
This hack consists of two courses, one of which is split up into three sub-areas, each containing slides. The second course is a secret level (but still occupying the area ID for a main course). None of the Stars in this hack will warp Mario out of the level.
In this hack, Mario can collect "mini Stars" on the slides. Each of these is worth 2 coins, and once Mario's coin counter hits 20, it will spawn a coin Star.
C4: Maro Slides[]
Slide 1[]
After selecting a file, the player is dropped into the hub area, which connects to three slides. The first slide requires the player to perform a BLJ using the slope directly ahead of them; the second slide is accessed via the left warp pipe, and the third slide is accessed via the right warp pipe. There is also a warp pipe behind Mario that will take the player to the endscreen.
The first area is a straight slide with some Piranha Plants living on it, and two mini Stars to collect on the way down. This slide requires Mario to slide over some very narrow portions of the slide, and to make a few jumps to dodge purple lava and the void below.
Slide 2[]
The second slide requires Mario to perform three consecutive wallkicks after the first mini Star, after which Mario needs to jump to the higher up slide on the left. This set of obstacles is then repeated, albeit with more wallkicks added. Then, at the bottom of the third section of this slide is two walls for Mario to wallkick up between. There is one final section of the slide that leads straight down to the end. There are a total of four mini Stars on this slide.
Slide 3[]
The third slide takes place between two stony cliffs, before splitting off into two paths over the void. The right path is populated with numerous Piranha Plants, and has no Lakitu's on it, and leads to the end of the slide with no problems.
The left path has no Piranha Plants, and has a set of fast-moving Lakitu's near its end. The slide area around these Lakitu's will intentionally screw up Mario's movement, and make him freeze (essentially forcing the player to reset the game). This is probably done with the purpose to make the player realise that there is a Star floating above the slide a little further down, given how easily the Stars in this hack blend into their surroundings.
To get this Star, kick back up the slide right at the start so that Mario falls off. Tilt the control stick to steer him and land on the giant Toad's head below. Once here, line Mario up with the Star, then slide down the side of Toad's huge head and leap off, using the momentum to land on the section of slide where the Star is. Be sure to avoid the warp at the bottom of the slide, which has a generous radius. The section of slide with Star above it can actually be walked on, mostly, although it is still fairly slippery. Perform a triple-jump, or a sideflip with a groundpound to reach the Star in the air.
Final Slide[]
This is the only slide area that is not accessible via the hub world. It features an easy slide down to the bottom, where Mario can run around on the floor.
A warp pipe is in the middle of this area, and it will take Mario back to the hub world. A Star is also in front of this pipe, so that anyone who finished the slide levels without collecting enough coins doesn't have to leave emptyhanded. Also in this area is two slope structures for BLJ's, and Koopa shell in a box around the back of the slide; these are only for traversing the floor, as they all help Mario to move a much greater speeds.
C3: Secret Level[]
Note that Secret Level is the name, whereas this course actually occupies the area ID for course 3. This area is accessed by longjumping onto the sideways Star in the hub area, whoch is behind the endscreen warp pipe, then moving towards one of the higher points of the Star.
This course is a platforming course floating over a sea of dark green quicksand. There are ten mini Stars to collect, in addition to the rare gold mini-Star obtained from a small Piranha Plant, which is worth only one coin. This area also contains the Wing Cap Switch near the bottom of the platforming level, and a Wing Cap at the top of the level. There are two Stars available here; one requires Mario to collect 20 coins (which in turn requires the Wing Cap), and the other Star is at the top of the level.
