Ballin' 64 is a ROM hack created by Anoliah for the SimpleFlips' Slide Hack Competition (2024) ft. PirateSoftware, in which it placed 16th.

Gameplay Mechanics[]

This hack has disabled fall damage, Mario's lives counterl and replaced the title screen and file select screen completely. Stars are awarded by achieving the A rank on any of the courses, except for Tutorial which does not rank the player's performance.

Movement/Controls[]

Mario's moveset has significantly changed, although he is still able to wallkick and groundpound. To increase his speed, Mario needs to head downhill (otherwise he will only roll slowly across a level surface), or get a speed boost from one of the custom objects.

If Mario is jumping/bouncing, momentum can be conserved by timing an A press with the moment he lands on the ground. If done correctly, Mario can bounce very high without any loss of speed. Airtime is very responsive to how long of an A press is used for the jump.

Pressing Start and Z at the same time will instantly reset Mario back to the level's start (by exploding him), and reset the timer as well.

Custom Objects[]

  • Gold Rings - These rings mark the finish. Mario must pass through the ring to stop the race timer, and have the race formally finish.
  • Red Rings - These rings will give Mario a speed boost when passed through. Seen in Retro.
  • Ground Spikes - These are flat in appearance, and will instantly kill Mario upon touching him, causing him to be sent back to the level's start. seen in Retro.
  • Fire Bars - These will deal 8 points of damage to Mario, causing him to be sent back to the level's start. seen in Retro.

Areas & Stars[]

This hack contains seven secret courses, none of which have any requirements to unlock. Tutorial is the only course that doesn't give a rank upon passing through the gold ring at the end of the course. On the other six secret courses (The Big Bounce, Mario Kart, Icy Roads Ahead, Retro, Fireball, Pinball), achieving an A rank will add one Star to the player's Star count, meaning that there are six Stars to collect in this hack.

Trivia[]

  • On the title screen, moving the joystick or the camera controls will spin the Mario ball in the top-right corner.
