Chomp Island is a ROM hack created by D00pliss back in 2012. It features a single custom level named Chomp Island which replaces Bob-omb Battlefield.

This hack has no custom hub world, and instead uses the Castle Grounds and Castle interior from vanilla SM64. The only notable changes to the vanilla areas are the addition of some enemies in the Castle Grounds, and a retextured Toad in the Castle Lobby. Additionally, the painting for Bob-omb Battlefield has been replaced by a custom texture which warps Mario to Chomp Island.

The creator of this hack challenges any players to try and obtain all 200 coins that can be found in this course, however it should be noted that this can only be done on Acts 5 and 6 due to a specific Chain Chomp's absence from the first four Acts.

Stars[]

Act 1: To The Top[]

This Star can be found at the highest point in the level, which is at the top of the brick castle. There are many ways to reach the top as the brick castle's structure is quite convuluted. Recommend using this Act as an oppurtunity to become familiar with the brick castle's layout, such as keeping an eye out for red coins or points of interest. If ascending the castle is proving troublesome, read more about it below.

Act 2: The Cave Star[]

Enter the cave through either one of its entrances, and enter the large room within. In here, there is a pool of water with some thin pillars in it; jump across these pillars to reach the other side. Once there, climb to the top of the tree and leap off of it towards the high rocky shelf, which is where the Star is.

Act 3: Chuckya's Star[]

For this Star, Mario will need to navigate the brick castle's exterior architecture on the side opposite Shy Guy Castle. Up on two of these brick shelves is a Chuckya on its own- and one of these shelves also has a Star on it.

Act 4: Shy Guy's Castle Star[]

Use whatever means necessary to bust into Shy Guy Castle. This can be done by climbing the cliffs to the left of the Castle, then either slope-kicking up next to the wall, or leaping off of a tree at the same spot then wallkicking quickly and ledge-grabbing. The Star is high up next to the closed portculis, being guarded by a Giant Shy Guy.

Act 5: Leap Of Faith To Chomp Island[]

As the name implies, this Star requires Mario to reach Chomp Island. The recommended way of doing this is to head to the top of the brick castle, then long jump all the way down to the island. Mario will take 4 points of damage, but the temporary invincibility he's granted after taking damage will protect him for long enough to avoid the Chain Chomp. The sides of Chomp Island are slippery, so Mario will need to slide down the side closest to the Star on the distant ledge, then jump before the end and let the momentum carry him over to the Star.

Act 6: Chomp Island's 8 Red Coins[]

The locations of the red coins are as follows:

  • Above Chomp Island's Chain Chomp post.
  • Under the bridge leading to Shy Guy Castle, hidden in one of the pillars.
  • In that weird nook to the side of the brick castle.
  • On the lower branches of the giant tree.
  • At the top of the corner of the map, opposite the brick castle and adjacent to Shy Guy Castle.
  • At the top of the brick castle, up in the air. Requires a triple jump-dive to reach.
  • Inside the cave, in a high alcove above one of the entrances. Requires some wallkicking to reach.
  • In one of the middle areas of the brick castle, on the side overlooking Shy Guy Castle. On top of a small pillar to the left of the "Shy Guy's Castle might seem impenetrable...".

The red coin Star spawns all the way at the bottom of the underwater cave.

Coin Star[]

A blue coin switch near Mario's starting point will spawn 5 blue coins for him to collect, for a total of 25 coins. There are two Piranha Plants in this course, which will both drop a blue coin each when defeated. Five coins can also be summoned by running around any of the Chain Chomps' posts several times, in the same way that coins can be summoned from a normal wooden post.

If you are planning on attempting the 200 coin challenge the hack creator encourages, be sure to play only on Acts 5 and 6. On Acts 5 and 6, an extra Chain Chomp can be found in the level under the Big Tree, which will give 5 coins from its post (see image).

Landmarks[]

ChompIsland-7

View of the brick castle.

The Brick Castle[]

The brick castle is a mostly uninhabited monolithic structure with an intricate network of paths reaching up to the top of the level. It has numerous nooks and crannies hidden throughout, and even has a cave underneath it. It is possible to bypass the treacherous paths and warp straight to the top of the castle by standing on top of the signpost at Mario's starting point.

ChompIsland-10

Inside Shy Guy Castle.

Shy Guy Castle[]

Shy Guy Castle is a smaller fortress next to the brick castle. As its name implies, it is primarily inhabited by Shy Guy's. It is connected to the brick castle by a high bridge, although the portculis is very much closed. There are, however, other ways in, such as ascending the wall to the left of the Castle to bypass the wall.

ChompIsland-4

The room inside of the cave.

The Cave[]

The cave is located directly beneath the brick castle. It has two entry points, one of which can be reached from the ground near Mario's starting point. The cave consists of two tunnels and one large room with water in it, and a few pillars with coins on them, and a tree on the other side of the room.

ChompIsland-6

In front of the big tree, the circular grassy towering hill.

Chomp Island[]

This is the large circular hill in the centre of the course. It has sloped edges that will cause Mario to slide off of it, and a Chain Chomp on top.

Reaching the top of Chomp Island requires Mario to long-jump off of the top of the brick castle all the way down to Chomp Island.

ChompIsland-12

The entry point for the underwater cavern- it is a hole in the sand directly in front of Mario and under the bridge.

The Underwater Cave[]

This is a vast cavern located directly below the level. It is accessed by swimming down through a gap in the sand between two walls (see image). The only things present here are two underwater Chain Chomp's, (at least) one gold coin, and the spawn location for the red coin Star. The Star's marker is at the very bottom of the cave, partially hidden by a sandy outcrop in the cave's wall.

ChompIsland-5

The big tree in the distance, on the left side of the screen.

The Big Tree[]

This is a very large two-tiered tree that can be found in the corner of the map opposite to Shy Guy Castle. The upper leaves aren't accessible, but the lower leaves can be jumped onto from a nearby grassy path.

Trivia[]

  • In front of Mario's starting point for Chomp Island (the level) is a signpost. By standing on top of this sign, Mario can warp up to the top of the brick castle.
  • The level Chomp Island was originally intended to be the first course in a much larger SM64 ROM hack, which unfortunately never came to fruition.
  • The level itself, Chomp Island, was later included in SirRouven1003's Level Pack.
  • When initially published on romhacking.com, Chomp Island was categorised as being a kaizo hack. It has since been amended to the Original category.
