Depths of the Abyss is a ROM hack created by a small group of ROM hackers, who all participated in a 48 hour HackJam, in which the theme was "layers".
This hack, despite having been created in 2023, wasn't uploaded to RHDC until almost a year later.
Gameplay[]
This is a linear non-stop (meaning that Stars do not initiate warps) hack that requires the player to collect all of the Stars in the level before being able to progress onwards. When Mario has obtained all of the Stars available in a level, a cutscene will play in which the stone door blocking the way forwards is shown being rolled out of the way. Unfortunately, this also negates the dialogue that allows the player to save their progress, meaning that many Stars can't be immediately saved.
Fall damage has been disabled, and collecting a Star will refill Mario's health. There are no Act select screens in this hack.
This hack contains two 100 coin Stars to collect; the first can be collected at any point during courses 15, 2, 13 or 4, as Mario's coin count is retained between each area. Upon warping to course 5 (actually called Wing Mario Over the Rainbow on the pause menu), Mario's coin counter is reset back to zero, and another 100 coin Star can be collected at any point during courses 5 and 6 (course 6 actually having the area ID C14).
