Detective Mario: Murder on Ice is a collaborative hack made by BoomerDaCat and spk for the Mario Jams Facade Competition, in which it placed 2nd.
Solve the murder of one unlucky penguin as you interrogate numerous NPCs and break the facade of the townsfolk.
This hack features a custom text-based input mechanic that allows for a more story-oriented approach towards the game.
This hack uses a custom text engine that allows the player to use an in-game search function. If the player inputs the name of a character, place, object (etcetera), the game will return dialogue reciting the knowledge that is currently available on the subject. Shorter versions of some names are also recognised, such as using "Glenn" rather than "Dr. Glenn".
Introduction[]
Upon starting, a cutscene plays that shows Detective Mario in his office, and introduces the story with the following dialogue:
It Started as a normal day, I had just got to my office when I noticed a letter on my desk. It had no return address, but it asked me to come to the small town of Chillville in the Shiver Kingdom. Apparently someone's gone missing, presumed dead. I looked into it and found out that a body was found in town at the dock this morning. Before I could think, I was already boarding the first train to Chillville. This sounded like just the kind of mystery for me, Detective Mario.
As I arrived in Chillville, I thought to myself... "By pressing START, you can access your search menu. You can search for terms, people, and more. If you want, try searching 'CASE' to learn more about the murder. When you're ready to solve the case, simply type 'SOLVE' into the search menu to solve the case. You can also read that letter by typing in 'Letter' into the search.' Ok, let's get going.

No. 1 can be found in the field next to the houses at the lowest level of town. talking to them will prompt the following:
I saw Rob near the dump a few days ago, I wonder what for?
No. 2 can be found next to the lake. Talking to them will prompt the following dialogue:
I wonder how Rob's friend Frank is doing, not easy to lose a friend like that.
No. 3 is a lighter-coloured penguin that can be found near the P-Mart and Club Penguin. Talking to them will prompt the following dialogue:
Victor always be spending his time in the Club, what a loser!
No. 4 is a cop penguin standing to the left of the giant icecube containing the victim. Talking to him will prompt the following dialogue:
Someone called a PI? Well good thing you're here, 'cuz we're all stumped. We can't really break this open to perform a proper autopsy since it could harm the body, so we're gonna wait for it to melt. You should talk to the Sheriff, he's at the police station right now.
No. 5 is a cop penguin standing to the right of the giant icecube containing the victim. Talking to him will prompt the following dialogue:
Am I glad that he's frozen in there and that we're out here and that's he's the sheriff and that we're frozen out here and that we're in there and I JUST REMEMBERED we're out here! What I want to know is where's the caveman? -his eyes are bloodshot-
