Super Mario 64 Hacks Wiki

Dream 64 is a ROM hack made by SonicandMarioGames1985 for the Dream Themed Level Competition, in which it placed 19th. There are multiple versions available to play, including a version featuring Luigi as the playable character, and Green Demon versions for both Mario and Luigi. The latest version, v1.1, removed 100 coin Stars, which could be obtained in three out of the five main courses.

Plot[]

Dream 64 takes place in an area that somewhat resembles Peach's Castle, but instead features a mansion in a visually similar style. As Mario progresses, he will quickly figure out that he is actually stuck in a dream- one which is being controlled by Bowser. And worse yet- Bowser has learnt how to use that power to bring what happens in the dream into reality. In order to escape the dream, Mario must take back the Power Stars and force Bowser to relinquish his control over the dream realm.

Areas[]

Overworld[]

Inside the "castle" can be divided into its basement, main foyer, and upstairs. Almost immediately after entering through the main entrance, the player is intended to fall through a trapdoor leading to the basement (although a player who knows to jump over this can get early access to C3, thereby skipping the basement). There is also a back entrance to the "castle" which leads to the main foyer.

Once in the basement, the player will be "trapped" in a room in which the only exit is a door requiring 1 Star to open. Fortunately, Mario can jump into the Chuckya painting and enter the first secret course, Chuckya Castle. Once the 1 Star door has been unlocked, Mario gains access to Wet-Dry Town and the Castle Interior, as well as the Cap Switches. The Switches can be accessed by entering the door on the left and swimming down and activating the lower water crystal. Once the water level has been lowered, Mario can enter the door next to the crystal. This door leads to the room underneath the Chuckya Castle room, and all three Switches can be located here.

After collecting enough Stars (3?), Mario is free to leave the basement and head up to the main foyer- do bear in mind that the trapdoor at the main entrance will remain active, however. The main foyer contains the painting to C3, two 3 Star doors leading to C1 and C2, and an 8 Star door underneath C3's painting.

Behind the 8 Star door is a twin set of stairs leading up to a walkway. At one end of the walkway is the painting leading to C5, and opposite that is the 15 Star door leading to Bowser (this door will lock behind Mario after entering). Midway on the walkway is a Vanish Cap and a door leading to the mirror room. The Vanish Cap can be used in the mirror room to access the painting for C4, which is behind the mirror.

States[]

The hub world's inside areas have two states they can be in. The first is the normal default state, and the second is a Boo-ridden darker state with eerie music. This "deathly" state is activated by dying in any of the courses. The warps stay the same for everything, however, so it is primarily a cosmetic change. It can be reverted back to its default state by entering any course and collecting a Star or exiting course through the pause menu, or simply by resetting the ROM.

No. Name Stars Stars Required Notes
C1 Whomp's Battlefield 4 3 Accessed via the main foyer's left room, in the painting featuring three Whomp's.
C2 Jolly Roger Dock 4 3 Accessed via the main foyer's right room, in the JRB beta painting.
C3 Shifting Weather Land 4 3, technically 0 Accessed via the pyramid painting in the main foyer, above the door leading upstairs.
C4 Big Boo's Funhouse 4 8 Accessed via the mirror room upstairs, by using the Vanish Cap to enter the mirror then enter the scary Boo painting.
C5 Big, Blue Skylands 4 8 Accessed via the upstairs area, in the large painting of clouds in a blue sky.
SC Chuckya Castle 3 0 Accessed via the Chuckya painting in the basement.
SC Wet-Dry Town 3 1 Accessed via the basement, through the door above the Castle Interior entrance, and in the warp hole.
SC Castle Interior 3 1 Accessed via the basement behind the 1 Star door, through the dark doorway with its doors unhinged and left on the ground.
B1 Finale 1 15 Located upstairs. There is a mild jumpscare upon entering the B1 room for the first time, which takes the form of Mario yelling (as though he's falling off a ledge) and the eyes on Bowser's painting getting blacked out, but it shouldn't be a significant problem for anyone who's sensitive to jumpscares.

Dialogue[]

You've collected a Power Star! Now you can unlock the door trapping you in this room! It seems Bowser has discovered the ability the Stars have to control one's dreams and bring what happens in those dream into reality. Now Mario must defeat Bowser to escape this nightmare before it's too late. You've recovered three Power Stars! Now you can get out of the basement and explore the ground floor. Bowser seems to have lost some control so now this HUB world should be less linear. Don't forget to read signs and talk to other characters. They can often answer questions you may have.

You've recovered 15 Power Stars! Now you can open the Star Door on the second floor. Bowser's there, you know. Oh! You've found all of the Cap Switches, haven't you? Red, green and blue? The Caps you get from the colored blocks are really helpful. Hurry along, now. We have a big chance to take down Bowser now!

Finale - Tips for Fighting Bowser (Spoilers!)
This Bowser fight requires Mario to throw Bowser up some ledges around the side of the stage, before being able to throw him into the bomb. The ledges are all quite high, so often, some form of triple-jump/wallkick or sideflip/wallkick will be needed to climb up. Bowser will need to be thrown onto the next ledge up before Mario can follow him up.

Ledge 2 can be reached by sideflipping up against the dark wall and wallkicking off of it towards the grey wall, so Mario can grab the ledge. There is a singular bomb up high in the middle of the room.

This fight uses Bowser from B1, so only one bomb hit is required to beat him, and his moveset is limited. This fight can be quite tedious given how easy it is to miss a Bowser throw, and lose progress, so savestates are recommended to cut out the frustration of losing progress in a Sisyphean uphill battle.
