Goomba's are one of the major enemies of the Mario franchise. They usually attack Mario by frantically running toward him, often appearing in small groups. They are easily defeated by jumping on them or via various physical moves like diving and punches.
Goomba's are typically spawned in three different formations: on their own; as part of a trio (triangular formation), or in a group of four (square formation). Depending on how the spawn points for groups of Goomba's are positioned, some Goomba's may be prone to wandering off of the edge of a platform, or in some cases, may spawn completely off the platform and end up falling.
When a Goomba falls off of its platform, it will typically not be harmed and will continue wandering around looking for the player. Goomba's do not sustain fall damage, and like other SM64 enemies, are not harmed by the death barrier found at the base of certain "floating" levels (such as Cool, Cool Mountain or Bowser in the Dark World). However, if a Goomba is directly above lava with no platform between them, the Goomba will instantly die, even if the lava is a long distance away.
While wandering around, if a Goomba comes into contact with a Bob-omb, the Bob-omb will explode and kill the Goomba.
Presence in SM64 ROM Hacks[]
As a Playable Character[]
To date, there has been at least one SM64 ROM hack that featured a Goomba as a playable character- Goomba's Easter Egg Hunt.
While playing as Goomba, the player's movesets are much more restricted, which significantly increases the difficulty of the hack being played.
As an Enemy[]
- Pretty much every SM64 hack
As an NPC[]
Goomba's are occassionally used as NPC's for Mario to talk to. NPCs styled as enemies often deliver exposition for a plot, rather than advice or messages from the hack creator, which usually comes from a signpost, Bob-omb Buddy, or Toad. |
