Ice Lagoon is a ROM hack created by Pilzinsel64 that was included in SirRouven1003's Hack Pack. Currently, this hack is only available in German.
Overview[]
This hack contains one course over the course 7 area ID, called Eis Lagune, and one hub area that contains the warp pipe leading to course 7 and the Vanish Cap Switch.
This hack only contains five collectable Stars. Two more will crash the game upon collecting, and one Star can be spawned by returning Tuxie the baby penguin to his mother, except it spawns under the course. Both Stars that crash the game are located in the sub-area for the course, inside the volcano.
Gameplay Changes[]
The HUD has been disabled, with the exception of Mario's HP, which will appear in view if he has sustained damage. However, the HUD can be viewed fully while holding down the L button. Mario can no longer triple-jump, but will instead do another double-jump, which can be repeated endlessly provided the player keeps timing the jumps.
Mario now has the ability to perform a spin will in midair, by pressing the R button. It gives Mario a slight boost and allows him to linger in the air for an extra second.
Stars[]
Act 1: Der Grosse Eis Bully[]
For this Star, head over to the island behind the "volcano". Here, there is a Big Chill Bully; smack it into the burning ice/blue lava, and the Star will spawn on top of the pillar-like island behind this one, which has three square floating platforms leading up to it. Bear in mind that these will collapse under Mario very quickly, and they don't seem to respawn after collapsing, so don't linger.
Act 2: Gefrorene Bloecke[]
For this Star, head back over to the far side of the course, and jump to the island to the right of the Big Chill Bully's island. Here, there is a grey block that Mario can slowly push around. Push the block over to the nearby cliff so that Mario can use the block to reach the cliff edge, and climb up.
Repeat this with each grey block until Mario reaches the top, where the Star waits. You may need to dispose of a Spin Drift or Snowman along the way. If you are playing on Parallel Launcher or RetroArch, you can use the fast-forward function to speed up the process of moving the blocks, if you have that feature enabled.
Act 3: Erloschener Vulkan[]
Roughly translates to "Extinct Volcano". Note that collecting this Star will cause the game to crash, so it cannot be saved.
This is one of the Stars in the volcano, which is very similar to its vanilla counterpart, Lethal Lava Land's Inside The Volcano. You can enter the volcano by using one of the infinitely respawning Koopa shells to climb up the slippery side of the volcano, or simply by slope-kicking up it. Once inside, follow the path around the walls of the volcano to reach the top, where Mario can grab either the Star at the top of the path, or the one on a nearby floating island.
Act 4: Geheimnisse Unter Gittern[]
Roughly translates to "Secrets Under Bars". This Star requires the use of the Vanish Cap to enter the barred cages around the main area of this course. However, for whatever reason, these cages can only be entered through one of their walls; Mario with the Vanish Cap cannot pass through the tops of the cages.
The locations of each Secret are as follows:
- In the cage near Mario's starting point, with a coin ring over it
- Under the Penguin
- In the cage on the narrow path near the Penguin
- In the cage on the island where the shell spawns
- At the back-left corner of the course on the big island with a Vanish Cap on it (this island is to the left of the Big Chill Bully's island), (ignoring the cage directly under the Vanish Cap box) in the cage nearest to the Vanish Cap.
The Star will spawn at the top of the island to the left of the Big Chill Bully's island (where the last Secret listed is).
Act 5: Eisbrand Im Vulkan[]
Roughly translates to "Ice Fire In The Volcano". Note that collecting this Star will cause the game to crash, so it cannot be saved.
This is one of the Stars in the volcano, which is very similar to its vanilla counterpart, Lethal Lava Land's Inside The Volcano. Act 6: Quiz Mit Tuxie[]
For this Star, you need to find a specific warp pipe that will send Mario to the top of the highest island, where the Star is located.
To find this pipe, head around to the right side of the course, where the mother penguin is, then head towards the lower right corner (the one closer to Mario's starting point) using the wobbly platforms connecting the mother penguin's island to the three smaller islands.
On each of the three small islands, there is a warp pipe. Two of them will send Mario back to the course's starting point, and one will send him to the Star. The correct pipe is the one on the middle island.
Coin Star[]
There is no blue coin switch in this course, but there are still a large amount of coins in the course's main area. Don't enter the volcano looking for coins; there aren't many inside it, and it's likely that collecting the coin Star inside the volcano would cause the game to crash.
