Luigi and the Forest Ruins 64 is a ROM hack made by TheGael95.
Since its 2014 release, the hack has been criticized for its lack of level design clarity, its confusing Star count due to the appearance of the Yellow Switch, and a jarring length and difficulty on its gameplay and missions. However, it should be noted that such criticisms are common for hacks created during that time; the advancements made by the ROM hacking community inevitably come with the unfortunate side effect of throwing an unflattering light on earlier releases.
Its remake, Luigi and the Forest Ruins: Rebooted was created by Mariocrash and released in 2016.

Trivia[]
- Although the hack's intended Star count is 46, and even though the Yellow Switch is involved, pressing it will increase the count up to 4 Stars, as well as making the final cut up to 50 Stars. It also causes Luigi's hat to disappear indefinitely after saving the game.
- On the same topic of confusing Star count, there is an extra 47th star hidden in the hack, and located within the forest area with no particular hint. MIPS also appears later at the top of Nuro Ruins after 15 Stars are collected.
- The 2.5D section of Underground Ways can be skipped entirely, as there is a hidden warp pipe located on the top of the area; said warp pipe leads to the fight against Bowser.
