Super Mario 64 Hacks Wiki

Mario is the main protagonist of the Mario series, and of vanilla Super Mario 64. It can be assumed that he stars in almost every hack of SM64 that has been published, although there are some that have replaced him entirely with a different character.

To find out more about hacks that don't star Mario as the playable character, have a look at our article on Character Hacks, or see a list character hacks noted on this wiki at the .

Many hacks feature cosmetic changes made to Mario, sometimes for context, and sometimes for aesthetic value. At the end of this article is a gallery with examples of retextures of Mario's model done by hack authors; some also include changes to the model itself.

Triple Jump

The triple jump requires Mario to perform three consecutive jumps in a row, but it requires quick timing to perform. The first jump is simply a regular jump from Mario. The second jump, often referred to as the double jump, gains more height than the first, but not as much as is gained by the third jump or by the sideflip.

The second jump has very generous requirements for the timing, but the third jump, the triple jump, requires much faster timing with the A press. It is the highest of all of Mario's jumps, and one of the very few that can be performed off of a slippery slope.

Triple jumps are frequently required when playing more challenging hacks, and like most of Mario's abilities, it has certain conditions and rules it abides by:

  • The double jump must be performed on a surface that Mario could typically jump off; it cannot start while Mario is standing on something like a slippery surface. However...
    • The last step of the triple jump, when Mario touches the ground between the second and third jump, is not restricted by this- Mario can triple jump off a very slippery slope, provided that the A presses are timed correctly.
  • Double jumps can be performed while without any forwards momentum- Mario can double jump on the spot. But to triple jump, Mario's needs a certain amount of forwards momentum to perform that final flip. Many kaizo hacks will require the player to be able to perform a triple jump off of a very narrow platform, which can be done with enough practice and the right inputs.

Ground-pound

The ground-pound (also written as groundpound, ground pound, and butt stomp), is performed by pressing Z to crouch while Mario is airbourne.

Performing a ground-pound brings Mario's forwards momentum to a complete stop. Ground-pounds are also considered an attack from Mario, and many enemies will take damage from Mario if they make contact while he is in the ground-pound animation. Ground-pounds can also be used to break certain objects (such as item boxes). When Mario ground-pounds, it causes him to remain suspended in the air for a short moment, before descending directly downwards very quickly.
