Mario Builder 64 is a ROM hack created by Arthurtilly and rovertronic. It is a sandbox-style hack that allows the player to create their own Super Mario 64 levels using a range of tools, such as blocks for building terrain, enemies and bosses, and collectable items.
Mario Builder 64 is a toolbox letting you fulfill all of your SM64 dreams. Play one of the numerous user-made levels, or create a course pushing your imagination (and hardware) to its limits!
Play!
It's never been easier to access new SM64 content. Just by reading from an SD card, the game can play any user-generated level that catches your eye. Whether you love #retro throwbacks or kaizo platforming, you can count on community levels to fill any and every niche. Can't find anything you like? Good thing you can...
Build!
Let your ideas spill onto the canvas, one block at a time. The level editor is easy to pick up, but offers a lot of depths to advanced users - whether you're making a speedrun level, an 8-star course or an 8-bit calculator, the palette of over 100 parts will suit your needs.
The levels are endlessly customizable, with a vast selection of music, a theme editor for committed designers and an expanded interaction system ready to support any contraptions your mind envisions!
Beyond Vanilla
The 'Beyond the Cursed Mirror' theme lets you build levels using mechanics from the creator's eponymous major hack. Uncover the 'Badge' system, offering the player permanent, unlockable powerups, or utilize parts taken from the hack, such as the ever-endearing Showrunner boss!
Setup Guide:
Controls[]
|
[]
Pressing 'START' on any of the first seven of the nine toolbar slots will open the materials menu. This menu has two pages; the first holds basic building blocks and most of the available objects (which includes some non-vanilla objects). The second page holds all of the enemies, as well as hostile objects (such as fire-spinners or Bowser bombs) and the marker for Mario's starting point. Selecting any of the items from the materials menu will replace whichever toolbar slot is highlighted with the selected material.
The eighth toolbar slot contains a green tick which, upon selecting, will save the game and let the player playtest it. The final toolbar slot, which has a small grey gear on it, is used to access the settings.
Settings[]
System[]
This page can be used to save and quit the level being worked on, which will skip playtesting it. Alongside the 8th toolbar slot, this settings page can also be used to playtest the level, but the most vital part of this page is the percentages shown at the bottom. These represent how much memory is being used by the level being worked on, and how much is remaining.
"Verts" refers to the vertex pool. It is recommended to keep this percentage below 80%, and to exercise caution when working on a level nearer to the vertex limit. According to one of the developers, when the vertex pool is overloaded, it causes the game to crash "in a spectacular flame".
"Tiles" refers to the number of tiles used, and how many more the player can place.
Level Boundary[]
This page changes the edges of the level.

Environment Settings[]
When the custom theme is selected, a fourth option appears at the bottom of the options window. Selecting this will allow the player to view and alter the designs for each tile
Using the first option, the player can switch between premade block palettes based off of a multitude of locations. Red Hot Reservior, Virtuaplex and Retroland are all based off of courses from SM64: Beyond the Cursed Mirror. Each palette is typically comprised of at least eight or nine standard blocks, one hazard block, and one type of iron mesh, pole and fence. When creating a custom theme, the player can use all ten of the block options however they wish, and do not need to include a hazard.

The original Super Mario 64 soundtrack; the original soundtrack for SM64: Beyond the Cursed Mirror, and a collection of music from other games ported into SM64 by the ROM hacking community.

Miscellaneous[]
This page can be used to enable/disable the coin Star and change how many coins are required to spawn it, using increments of 10 to switch between.
It is also where the player can enable Water Level mode, which changes the floor of the level to be water instead of solid tiles (citation needed).
