Night of Doom: The Perfect Run is a ROM hack created by Mariocrash and StanFuzz. It is an expansion on the original Night of Doom created by BroDute.

The second hack editing levels from the original Night of Doom (after Night of Doom: The Green Comet), it focuses more on Super Mario Galaxy 2's concept of the Perfect Run (Grandmaster Galaxy's prankster comet Star), which is to make it through difficult platforming sections without getting hit or dying.

This hack takes level geometry from 10 of Night of Doom's hardest levels and places them one after the other, often adding sections or placing obstacles that were not in the original levels to further increase the already hard difficulty.

There are two versions both featuring only one Star: the Normal version, which intends to be the main difficulty as a way to test the players' platforming skills; and the Lite version, which features a checkpoint system after every individual stage, meant to make the Star significantly easier.

Also, both versions have easter eggs hidden in several locations that can be found throughout the game. The only differences are the new music tracks and the ending area that is rewarded once the Star is collected.

Levels[]

Since the levels are all named "The Perfect Run", here are listed the stages that appear in the order the player would encounter them. The secret signs, however, will only disclose a word to form a sentence.

Name Notes Secret Sign Location
Blue Nightmare Sky (Course 5) The first stage. The goal is to reach the castle. At the top of the "LOL" formation
Gray Forest Temple (Course 7) The second stage. The goal is to get to the black tree. At the tree near the blockade of blue blocks
Bowser's Old Domain The third stage. The goal is to reach the toxic underside of the factory. Due to the toxic gas, this stage is the one of two (the other being Course 10's green section) where the player health is not constantly at 1 HP. At the secret alcove of the main area
Mysterious Snow Castle (Course 9) The fourth stage. The goal is to explore the castle and reach the pipe from the other side. On the inverted rainbow
Bowser's New Sky Palace (Bowser 2) The fifth stage. The goal is to get to the boss pipe at the top of the palace. At the inverted broken bridge
Second Key Boss Fight This area plays as the second half of the fifth stage. The goal is to reach the pillar with Bowser's painting. Despite being the shortest area of the game, it doesn't have a secret sign.
Discolored Madness (Course 15) The sixth stage. The goal is to get to the top of the castle. In the secret alcove of the castle (v1.0)
Within the barrage of flames near the spiraling tower (v1.1)
Destroyed Star Boulevard (Bowser 3) The seventh stage. The goal is to get to the end of the stage, where the Bowser 3 fight would be in the original game. At the firsty-required wallkick section
Tricky Towers Trials (Course 10) The eighth stage. The goal is to storm through the red, green, and blue towers. At the top of the green tower
Dat Letters (Course 11) The ninth stage. The goal is to climb up the letters and reach the letter S pipe. Inside the fake pillar of the broken G
Rainbow Drugs (Course 12) The tenth and final stage. The goal is to climb to the top of the level and collect the Star. Inside the second red brick wall

Miscellaneous[]

Area Notes
Overworld The beginning of the game, and also where the game ends in the Lite version. Pipes to the Perfect Run and Cap Switches are in this area. In v1.1, two secret signs are located there: inside the second overworld entrance and upon the hills above the Old Sand Slide entrance.
Bowser's Switch Palace (v1.0) This stage is unused except for a part where the player activates the requiring Cap Switches. A secret sign is behind the pillar. The area does not make an appearance in the update due to switches being unlocked by default.
Ending Area Exclusive in the Normal version, this area is the second overworld turned bright and peaceful.
Rest Area Exclusive in the Lite version, this area is the checkpoint system when the player dies in any of the corresponding stages.

Trivia[]

  • Thwomps and Toads have their facial texture replaced by the OpieOP emote, which is frequently posted by StanFuzz in his (extremely rare) Twitch livestreams. The original Night of Doom had Thwomps with the FrankerZ emote.
  • During development, Big Sand Cavern was going to be part of the Perfect Run, but it got scrapped due to technical issues. Possible additional stage candidates were also considered to be included, such as Lost Bay Town or the First Key Boss Fight.
  • The Rest Area is the de-facto third overworld, as in the tower interior of the Normal version which doesn't appear at the ending.
  • Stars are platinum-colored in the Normal version, while the Lite version has bronze-colored Stars, showing that the Lite version is supposed to be less rewarding than the main challenge.
  • At the bottom end of the blue tower, coins form a heart as a reference to the defeat of Eely-Mouth in Noki Bay from Super Mario Sunshine.
