Super Mario 64 Hacks Wiki

SM64: Beyond the Cursed Mirror is a ROM hack created by rovertronic, featuring a strong narrative and a wide range of custom mechanics and cutscenes.

This hack contains 120 Stars, including 80 Power Stars and 40 "Cosmic Seeds", the latter of which is often awarded for completing a particularly difficult mission, such as defeating one of this hack's many custom bosses.

Plot[]

“Greetings SuperStar, Did you know that your nemesis hid in the decrepit castle all this time? It appears he fosters his strength in a hidden compartment behind one cursed mirror. I implore you to defeat him, once and for all – for the sake of the kingdom. -Yours truly, The Showrunner”
Via RHDC

This hack takes place a significant amount of time after the events of Super Mario 64. Mario receives a cryptic letter containing the above message, which serves as an invitation to star in a live-action show. However, the deeper Mario ventures into the world of the Showrunner, he becomes caught up in the ongoing interstellar battle to appease the "Parasite Moon".

Gameplay Mechanics[]

Health
Mario's health is now represented by a horizontal red bar in the lower left corner of the screen. This bar is segmented to represent individual hit points; it does not change colour depending on Mario's health like it does in vanilla SM64. The number of hit points Mario has can increase by levelling him up. The maximum number of hit points Mario can have is 20.

Mana
This function displays as a horizontal blue bar below the health bar, and is upgraded each time Mario levels up. Mana points are used up when a special ability takes effect, particularly a badge. The maximum number of mana points Mario can have is 20.

Wallet
Coins that are collected in courses and levels will be transferred to a separate Castle account after obtaining a Star. Many courses will also allow Mario to transfer any coins he has collected in the course to his Castle account without leaving the area, by finding a Moneybag and talking to it. Coins are used in the overworld for many actions, including levelling Mario up, purchasing badges, and buying access to minigames. Initially, the maximum amount of coins Mario can keep in his Castle account isn't much, but for each wallet upgrade he finds, the maximum number of coins he can hold in his Castle account increases by 50. The fully upgraded wallet will hold up to 700 coins.

Badges
Badges are a type of item that can be equipped to Mario. There are a total of 24 unique badges Mario can collect, with each one having its own different effect on some aspect of the gameplay. The maximum number of badges Mario can equip at once increases as Mario levels up; the maximum number of badges Mario can equip is 6.
Read more on badges: SM64: Beyond the Cursed Mirror/Badges

Inertia
"Inertia" refers to the physics of vanilla Super Mario 64 being expanded upon, by allowing Mario to more accurately acquire momentum from moving objects. While SM64 only contains inertia for certain objects pushing Mario upwards, this hack has a more complete set of inertia physics.

Levelling
Mario now has a set of stats that can be altered through "levelling up", or through other actions, such as wearing certain badges. The only stats visible to the player are health and mana, but other stats can be changed as well, such as Mario's speed, or the amount of gravity he's experiencing. When Mario levels up, his health and mana will permanently increase by one point, and he will gain the ability to wear one more badge at a time. Levelling up will cost Mario a certain amount of coins and require a certain number of Power Stars to be obtained; the maximum level he can reach is level 8.

New Game+
(v1.3+ only) After completing the game, the player can choose to start a new file as a New Game+. This will randomly shuffle around things such as costume/wallet locations, badge merchants, and the order of courses. It also introduces positive and negative rules (more information needed).

Collectibles[]

Coins collected in courses can be used in the overworld; to transfer coins to Mario's wallet in the overworld, he either needs to exit the course succesfully (as in, collect a Star/Cosmic Seed), or use one of the Wallet NPCs found in some levels to directly transfer the coins without leaving the level.
