SM64 Ruby is a ROM hack created by PhantoFantasma (AKA AshleyJPEG) for Scuttlebug raiser's 3rd Hacking Competition, which was themed around creating ROM hacks based on already-existing ROM hacks.
A Reimagining of SM64 Sapphire, made for the 3rd Scuttlebug_Raiser Competition. This hack currently has 14 Stars, coming from Courses 1 and 2.
Areas[]
The overworld area for this hack contains the Vanish Cap Switch and the Wing Cap Switch. Like in SM64 Sapphire's hub world, this one also contains four paintings arranged in a similar layout, however, two of them have been blocked off "for restoration".
Area ID | Name | Stars | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
C1 | Molasses Meadow | 7 | Based off of Maple Meadow |
C2 | Artic Apex | 7 | Based off of Polar Peaks |

B1 | Bowser in the Dark World | 0 | Requires 14 Stars to enter. |
C1: Molasses Meadow[]
Act 1: Mario On The Summit[]
Climb the mountain on the left side of the course. The easiest way up is to head to the back of the course and follow the path ascending upwards to the left, with the Whomp on it. The Star is at the end of this path. While up here, take a moment to survey the rest of the course to take note of the red coin locations.
Act 2: Make The Leap[]
Run into the cave dead ahead of Mario's starting point, and enter the tunnel to the right. The Star is up on the shelf ahead, although the ground below is sticky sand. To reach it, perform a sideflip against the wall and wallkick up to the Star.
Act 3: Fly To The Cloud In The Sky[]
Make sure you have the Wing Cap Switch in the lobby pressed. Run around the right side of the course to find the Wing Cap box in this level, between the Goomba's and blue coin switch. Once equipped, run up to the top of the mountain and take flight, while taking care not to accidentally touch the Star from Act 1. Fly straight over to the clouds, and jump up to the highest of them to collect the Star.
Act 4: Li'l Red Coins Lost[]
The red coin locations are as follows:
- On top of Chain Chomp's post
- On the tree stump with the Koopa running around it
- On top of the mini mountain peak before the high mushroom path leading to the top of the mountain
- On top of the green mushroom near Mario's starting point
- In the low alcove near the aforementioned coin, under a Piranha Plant
- On top of the tall red mushroom, up past the aforementioned green mushroom
- Above the Whomp on the way up the mountain
- Inside the cave, just to the left
The Star will spawn up in the clouds, on one of the lower clouds. To reach it, grab the Wing Cap and run up to the top of the mountain- this will give Mario enough height to fly to the clouds. If the last red coin you collected was the 6th one on top of the tall red mushroom, you will still have enough height to be able to fly straight to the clouds from there.
Act 5: Destroy An Ecosystem[]
This is a 5 Secrets mission disguised as a Piranha Plant murder spree, except these use the standard Piranha Plants that drop blue coins. The Piranha Plant locations are as follows:
- To the right of Chain Chomp
- Past Chain Chomp, on the way up the mountain
- To the right of the cave entrance
- To the left of the cave entrance
- In front of the mushrooms, with two red coins on them
The Star will spawn in front of the cave entrance.
Act 6: Entering The Hill[]
The hill that the name of this Star is referring to is the one on the left side of the course, with a path of mushrooms over a chasm connecting it to Star 1's mountain peak. There is an entrance on the side of the hill facing Mario's starting point; enter it to be warped to the sub-area. This sub-area consists of a cave over a chasm with a descending path around its outer edge, with a boxed Star at the bottom. The platforming challenges are minimal, and the only enemies along the way are eleven Goomba's, although they are prone to falling down into the void below.
100 Coin Star[]
There is a toal of 165 coins in this level, including in the sub-area. The blue coin switch is located to the right of the tree stump with a Koopa running around it, on top of a pillar. It will spawn 5 blue coins nearby, with at least two being on top of the other pillars.
C2: Artic Apex[]
Act 1: Run To The Caged Island[]
From Mario's starting point, follow the right path a short way and begin wallkicking up the vertical passage in the wall. Once up there, jump up to the Vanish Cap box and put it on, then run through the cage surrounding the Star nearby. Rather than contend with the awkward thin slope path with the coin line along it, recommend running along the lower path (with the Spindrift and Snowman on it) then sideflipping and wallkicking up to the cage.
Act 2: !!!!!!![]
At Mario's starting point, pause to look ahead with the close-up camera. Near the middle of the course is a hill to the right of the frozen lake, with a slope ascending at the top, and a breakable box at the bottom. Head over to the base of the hill on the right and climb upwards, then head up the slope- the slope itself isn't slippery. The Star is in a ! box at the top of the slope.
Act 3: Red Coins On Precarious Planks[]
All 8 of the red coins are located on the wooden debris "floating" on the frozen lake at the centre of the course. The Star will spawn at the centre of the lake.
Act 4: Not-So-Secret Shell Surf[]
On the rocky shelf to to the left of Star 2, there is a box containing a Koopa Shell (it is not visible from Mario's starting point, but will render in once he's close enough). Use the Koopa Shell to discover the Secrets set out along the frozen river, which are all marked by lonely coins. If you lose the shell, don't worry- the ! box containing the Koopa Shell will respawn. Once the Secrets have all been discovered, the Star will spawn back at Mario's starting point.
Act 5: Pick Your Poison Perfectly[]
Grab the Vanish Cap from Act 1 and jump and run down to the other side of the course- head for the mushroom-shaped wooden platforms over the small frozen pond. At the top of them is two caged sections of wall, and a "?" between them. The only one Mario can jump through is the left section of caged wall. The collision over the "?" is a bit iffy, so be sure not to jump against it. After jumping through the correct wall, Mario will slide down and grab the Star himself.
Act 6: The World Of Penguiosis[]
The baby penguin is located to the right of Star 2, down next to the frozen river. If you are unfamiliar with the jumping physics in play when Mario is carrying an object (or penguin), his moveset is limited, and he cannot go very fast. To get the most speed from Mario, jump regularly, as his movement will only slow down for the object while he is on the ground. Therefore, to clear the jump over the frozen river, you'll need to do at least one jump leading up to it, so that his following jump over the river has enough momentum.
Once on the other side of the frozen river, slide down the path to the left and deliver it to the Mother Penguin. The Star will spawn nearby.
100 Coin Star[]
This hack contains at least 123 coins in total. The blue coin switch is located directly behind Mario's starting point. It will spawn five blue coins nearby.
B1: Bowser in the Dark World[]
This course has no Stars, and consists of a relatively simple linear platforming course leading up to a warp pipe. However, recommend making a savestate before entering the pipe. This is because it is possible to soft-lock the fight against Bowser. This happens when he is blasted back by a bomb but falls off the stage- this causes him to no longer be in his defeated state and revert back to his fighting state. As there is only one bomb, that means Mario can no longer defeat him. Otherwise, the fight is very easy- Bowser is in his idle state in front of a bomb when Mario enters, so all you need to do is grab Bowser's tail and immediately let go to finish him off.
