Super Mario 64: The Green Stars is a ROM hack made by Kampel125 and released in 2013. This hack features 130 Stars spread over 15 new main courses and 7 secret levels.

Also listed in the credits for hacking and help are Kaze Emanuar, Frauber, and VL-Tone. Recent verisons (3.3+) With QOL update and console compatibility are made by FrostyZako and PyroJay.

Plot[]

The game is intended as a sequel to Super Mario 64, and also makes references to Super Mario Galaxy. Once again, Bowser has stolen the Stars and used their power to create an army of monsters and kidnap Princess Peach. The Toads built a rocket to take Mario to Bowser, but Bowser locked it before Mario could get there, so the rocket serves as the first key-door of the game. The ending cutscene is the same as in the original game, though with minor changes.

Versions[]

The current stable releases are v1.3 and v2.1. Version 2.0 introduced new features such as 3D coins, visible secrets, and an improved HUD, but introduced several game-breaking bugs. These bugs were then fixed in v2.1.

V3.0 drastically overhauled the game, lowering 100-coin stars to 80 coins, only requiring 6/8 red coins and 4/5 secrets to spawn stars, replacing many stars throughout the game, removing lives and fall damage entirely, and many other changes like increasing swimming speed, slightly altering physics, and other minor changes to individual levels.

Newer hotfix versions such as v3.0 and up were created by FrostyZako. Newest and latest update is v3.4 as of September 2023. It was created and decomp ported by aglab2.

Trivia[]

  • Holding the L button in this hack activates a "telephoto lens". The camera returns to normal when L is released.
  • Both the Vanish Cap level and power-up was not inserted in this hack.
  • There exists an unused area with a 131st Star, however as far as anyone knows it is completely inaccessible by any normal means and can only be accessed by using hacking tools. It has been added in the latest update and the Star gets auto-saved after a game reset.
  • Sandy Seaside Bay's music port of Beach Bowl Galaxy remained an infamous meme for a couple years, it was rearranged by aglab2 in the latest update.
