Super Mario 64 Romhacks Marathon (abbreviated as SRM) is a twice-a-year event hosted by the Super Mario 64 Romhacks Community. Most of the events features speedruns, but there are showcases, gameshows and tourneys.
About[]
Submission, eligibility and availability[]
Approximately 1 month before each SRM event, there will be an announcement on the SM64 Romhacks Discord server. There are usually two main forms
- The Run Submission Form: This form is used if you want to speedrun a category of a specific hack in SRM. However, the amount of categories-hacks that you are allowed to submit is unlimited. In the form, you need to provide your Discord name, your preferred display name (can be different from Discord name), an estimate of how long the run will took, the category, and the hack. If you want to submit multiple runs in one form, you need to seperate the hacks, categories, and time estimates via the symbol "|". You do not have to fill in this form if you join a "staff" event.
- The Availability Form: This form is used to determine when you are available for a run, which helps scheduling. You will need to provide your Discord name, time zone, and availability within a few specific dates in your time zone. This form is required for all SRM participants.
Other forms include:
- The Kaizo Tournament SIgnup Form: This form is used to sign up for the Kaizo Tournament.
- The Romhack Feud Form: This form is used to sign up for the Romhack Feud.
- The Single Star Tournament Form (currently discontinued): This form is used to sign up for the Single Star Tournament.
- The SM64 Millionare Form (currently discontinued): This form is used to sign up for SM64 Millionare.
Naming and Scheduling[]
SRM is a twice-a-year event, with the first sub-event called "WSRM" or "Winter SM64 Romhack Marathon" and usually happens in early January. The second one is called "SSRM" or "Summer SM64 Romhacks Marathon", and usually happens on early August. These sub-events are also categorized by the year they take part in, for example the WSRM of 2024 will be called "WSRM2024".
SRM does not have a constant schedule, and the schedule can change at anytime depending on various circumstances.
Events at SRM[]
At SRM, there are usually three types of "subevents":
- Speedrun: These accommodate for most of the runtime of SRM. If you signup for a speedrun, you are required to livestream your speedrun, and without using tools such as savestates, fast-forwards or slowdowns.
- Showcase: Showcases events are usually for upcoming or newly released hacks. You are NOT required to provide live footage of gameplay during a showcase, and can use tools such as savestates, fast-forwards or slowdowns.
- Special events: These events are neither in the categories above, and are usually hosted by the SRM crew. Some of them include:
Event name | Description | Since | Ongoing |
---|---|---|---|
SM64 Millionare | A "Who Wants To Be A Millionare"-based gameshow that focuses on Super Mario 64 and its mods | SSRM2020 | No |
SM64 Single Star Tourney | An tournament-style event where for each match, 2 participants will be asked to get a single star in a hack as fast as possible, during the timespan of 5 minutes and the players are allowed to "grind" for a better time until the 5 minutes runs out, then the players are not allowed to attempt the star anymore. The runs are made in a special ROM that features one level each of the hacks chosen by the SRM crew, as well as featuring an single star timer and PB tracker. Whoever has the lower PB wins. | SSRM2020 | No |
Relay Race | "S18" is an event where two teams race for finishing the Star Revenge Standard Challenge. The event is then incorporated into SRM and now features even more teams racing for different hacks altogether. | "S18" | Yes |
Kaizo Tournament | A tournament-style event where for each match, 2 participants will be asked to get a star in an extreme hack as fast as possible, or go as far as possible. The runs will be done in a special ROM that features one level each of the extreme hacks chosen by the SRM crew. "As far as possible" here means that the closer the player get to a star, the better. All rounds initially have a timespan of 10 minutes, but the rules changed in WSRM2023 so that the SemiFinal, Bronze and Final rounds are 15 minutes in length, and that even if past the 15-minute mark, if someone's attempt is ongoing, then they will not be able to attempt anymore if they exit course, die or get the star. | SSRM2022 | Yes |
|Romhack Feud | A "Familiy Feud" like gameshow where 10 people are divided randomly into 2 teams of 5, and asked several questions about Super Mario 64 and its ROM hacks. | SSRM2023 | Yes |
Hosting and content[]
SRM is hosted on the Twitch channel sm64romhacks. However, it is streamed as a continuous event, with intermissions and transitions between different subevents. After SRM, the subevents are cut, edited and posted on the Youtube Channel sm64romhacks.
