Silent Scale is a ROM hack created by dspostma for the Music Themed Level Competition, in which it placed 28th.

This hack has one level followed by a boss fight, which will award Mario with the Grand Star. Stars in this hack are referred to as "notes", or "major notes". Collecting any of the Stars (notes) will not prompt the player to save, so progress cannot be saved for this hack.

There are four Stars available in the main section for this hack, with the fifth being the Grand Star from defeating the final boss. Once all four Stars have been collected, Mario will be able to enter the tower and face off against the Sorcerer who cursed the land, King Bob-omb.

The main level's different versions are actually all different courses designed to look very similar.

Warp Map[]

Area ID Relevance Stars Leading Here Leading Away Notes
C5 Level's first iteration. 1 File select. C1, door below the tree on the central pillar.
C1 This area acts as an overworld for this hack, and is the level's second iteration. 1 C5, door below the tree on the central pillar. C2's pillar door, C3's warp hole. The noteblocks allowing Mario to access the rest of the course are now present. Collecting a Star here warps Mario back to his starting point.
C2 King Whomp's room. 1 C1, door on the side of a pillar near the Fly Guy's. C1, collect the Star.
C3 Koopa the Quick's room. 1 C1, warp hole in the red coin area. C1, either die or collect the Star.
C4 Showdown against King Bob-omb. 0 C1, tower doors (requires 4 Stars). C7, jump to the Grand Star after defeating King Bob-omb. Dying from health loss here will softlock the game, but falling off the stage in King Bob-omb's room will simply send Mario back to C1.
C7 Level's final iteration. Grand Star End of hack (collect the Grand Star). This iteration has extra noteblocks added to allow Mario to reach the Grand Star out over the water.

Stars[]

The first Star can be obtained by jumping across the pillars to the right of Mario's starting point, and following the path along the wall until Mario reaches the Bob-omb Buddy next to its cannon. Using the cannon, the player can shoot to the tree in the middle of the level by aiming it in the middle of the coin ring. Once on the tree's platform, navigate to the lower path connected to this platform, and enter the door that leads into it. The Star is waiting for Mario inside.

The second Star requires Mario to enter a similar room, via another door on the side of the pillar just before the many Fly Guy's. In that room, Mario can fight and defeat King Whomp for another Star. Reaching this room requires Mario to have at least entered the first Star's room, so that he will no longer be in the first iteration of the level, which lacks the noteblocks needed to cross the water.

The third and fourth Stars have the same requirement as the second Star, regarding needing the noteblocks to cross the water. The third Star requires Mario to enter a warp hole in the red coin area, which will warp him to C3, where he can race Koopa the Quick for a Star. Dying or collecting the Star will send Mario back to the main level's second iteration, but will drop him near to the warp hole rather than back at the starting point.

The fourth Star is a red coin Star available in the second iteration of the main level. All of the red coins and the Star's spawn point are located on the land behind the group of Fly Guy's, with most of them being in the ruins on the right, and two red coins on the left side (above the block containing Star 3's warp hole, and above a tree).

Once Mario has four Stars, he can enter the Star doors at the base of the tower. Here, he will need to dodge a few waves of enemies from King Bob-omb's army, then enter the arena to face off against the sorcerer. Defeating King Bob-omb will spawn the Grand Star, which is the fifth and final Star of the hack.

Known Issues[]

As per the creator's own in-game sign:

  • Dying in the main level will likely mess up the camera. The creator recommends pressing L to fix Lakitu's camera.
  • The stone cube (presumably referring to the one containing the warp to C3) has a small collision hole on its side.
  • Dying from health loss in the tower (C4) will cause a softlock, so the creator recommends creating a savestate before entering. This is particularly advisable given that Star progress cannot be saved.
