Star Revenge 4.9: Adulterated Reality is a ROM hack made by BroDute, in collaboration with sizzlingmario4 and thebloody7. It is an extension of Star Revenge 4.5: The Kedama Takeover Rewritten, serving as the sequel in the timeline and containing many of the same areas, albeit very, very different in the wake of the Star Needle.
Story
After Mario dealt with Reverse BroDute in the Flying Fortress, the big Needle there corrupted and crashed into Peach's Castle, altering the Mushroom Kingdom to it's will. Mario and BroDute now set out to seek the Scepter of Faith to fix this mess.
Gameplay
Similar to other instalments in the Star Revenge series, navigating between levels can be done without returning to the overworld, are connected to one another (see map above). Initially, course 1 is the only level Mario can access from the overworld. From course 1, he can then reach a number of other courses. Each time Mario collects a Star in a course, a shortcut between the overworld and that course is unlocked. The first 13 main courses, all three Bowser levels and both switch palaces can be accessed from the Castle basement, once a Star has been collected in that level.
Dying in a course will not warp Mario back to the overworld, but will instead warp him to a transitional room with two warp pipes. The warp pipe on the white platform in front of him will send Mario back to the level he died in. The warp pipe behind Mario on the black platform will send Mario back to the previous level.
The cannon in the overworld can only be unlocked after activating the warp block switch. Once that's been activated, Mario can access the warp block hidden in Atrophied Mansion- this will warp him to the Bob-omb Buddy that opens the cannon for the overworld, and allows C15 to be accessed.
Each level has seven Stars to collect, however, the seventh Star is no longer a 100 coin Star. Instead, each course has a box hidden in it that, when broken, will spawn the seventh Star. This Star is always rainbow-coloured, and the box it's hidden in is marked with the number 7. In some courses, the box itself is actually invisible. Thankfully, hints pertaining to the locations of each 7th Star box can be found in-game. These hints have been included in the area information below.
Fall damage has been disabled in this hack. Red coin Stars now only require six out of the eight red coins to be collected, granting some leniency to the player if they are struggling with certain red coins. Collecting 100 coins no longer spawns a Star, as the 100 coin Stars have been replaced with the rainbow Stars.
The Cap Switches no longer activate the Wing, Metal and Vanish Caps, but now activate rideable Koopa shells, Bob-omb Buddies that unlock cannons, and warp blocks that unlock further areas. The Caps are rarely present in this hack, but when they are, there is no requirement for Mario to be able to use them- the Cap blocks are solid and breakable from the start of the game.
Areas
Mushroom Kingdom
The Mushroom Kingdom collection of areas can be accessed without any requirements. Initially, the only way into this collection of areas is to use the gateway leading to C1 Doubtful Creek Town, which is located near Mario's starting point in the Distorted Castle Grounds. This collective is represented by the green box on the warp map at the top of this article.
