Star Revenge 4: The Kedama Takeover (formerly called The Kedama Takeover 64) is a ROM hack made by BroDute, and is the fourth installment of the Star Revenge series. Released on March 3rd, 2014, it has 97 Stars on v1.0, until an updated version was later released in March 2019, with 100 Stars featuring a couple fixes. Also, this hack marks for the first time the involvement of the Touhou franchise, making it the prime crossover in the Mario series, and in the Star Revenge canon as a whole, as it stands today throughout a few sequels until Star Revenge 8: Scepter of Hope.
Like its predecessor, Star Revenge 3: Mario on an Saoire, it is an openworld hack, meaning all of the levels are connected, rather than being accessed through paintings, a world map or other means.
On September 23, 2016, this hack got a remastered version called Star Revenge 4.5: The Kedama Takeover Rewritten.
Plot[]
After Mario returns to the Mushroom Kingdom from his holiday on An Saoire, he finds the Kingdom to be overrun by new creatures called "Kedamas". Mario, understanding that the Kedamas are a threat to the Mushroom Kingdom, since they are wreaking havoc, goes to stop them and their leader.
Changes[]
This hack has many changes from the vanilla game. This list details them.
- Cap Switches are now in their own separate ROMs, which are in password-locked folders. This is because BroDute had a problem with the base game's ROM regarding the cap switches, so he uses separate ROMs (using the same header for all ROMs) to transfer save data between them.
- Cap Switches no longer bring Cap items anymore, they have been presented with 3 new items.
- Kedamas (which are retextured Goombas) move faster and deal extra damage.
- Coins are referred to as Cards, as reference to Touhou's spell cards; health and coin icons are represented by the Point, Power and Full Power Items from the franchise.
- Fire no longer homes at Mario when it is shot out of fire spitters.
- Unlike in Star Revenge 3, when Mario dies, he doesn't respawn inside the current level, instead, he is spat back to the previous level, causing to lose progress (especially for coin collecting, and tough-to-reach Stars.
- Regarding camera control, Mario Cam is the only functionality and Lakitu Cam is almost non-existent in this game since the player cannot switch angles by normal means (can switch between camera views one at a time from the pause menu).
