Super Mario 64: Rogue Chaos Edition is a ROM hack created by someone2639, ArcticJaguar725 and Anoliah for SimpleFlips' Chaos Mario Team Competition.

Tutorial Dialogue[]

In Super Mario 64: Rogue Chaos Edition, you will decide your own destiny as you activate and coordinate game-altering patches throughout your experience.

In this game, Mario will be sent to this patch selection menu any time he collects a star, key, or activates a cap switch. Here, you will need to select a patch card.

You will be confronted with a few different patch cards to choose from, each bundled with a unique positive and negative effect.

Patch Cards come with many different components, and it is important to understand what each symbol represents.

Each card's positive effect will be indicated by the green text on the card, and negative effects are indicated by red.

Each card will also be assigned a Patch Rank. The higher the listed rank, the more impactful the associated effects will tend to be on the gameplay!

Most effects come with an Expiration Timer, which specifies how many stars (blue stars included) may be collected until the effect expires. Some may even last forever!

Some special effects will come with a Use Counter nstead, which indicates a specific number of times that effect may be activated. These may be saved for use in the perfect scenario!

Occasionally, you will encounter a special event when visiting the patch selection menu. The three event types include Lucky events, Bad Luck events, and Chaos events.

A Lucky event will attempt to display positive effects that are valued one rank higher than each patch card's listed rank. Affected cards will be given a green background.

Conversely, a Bad Luck event will attempt to display negative effects that are valued one rank higher than each patch card's listed rank. Affected cards will be given a red background.

Lastly, a Chaos event will completely eliminate the positive effect from the patch cards, leaving only negative effects to choose from. Affected cards will be given a dark gray background.

This hack comes with an Easy, Normal, and Hard difficulty, as well as a special Challenge Mode.

On Easy difficulty, you won't have to worry so much about the most intense negative effects appearing. Recommended for players brand new to Super Mario 64, or to Mario games in general.

On Hard difficulty, you will need to endure brutal negative effects more frequently and for longer, with fewer offsetting benefits from positive effects. Recommended for experienced players only.

If you're feeling confident in your abilities, take on Challenge Mode! Your entire save file is on the line, and you must work to complete the game without running out of lives.

Your goal is to defeat Bowser and rescue the Grand Star. What kind of unique effect combinations will you experience during your adventure?

Gameplay[]

The cutscenes for starting a new file, Lakitu's introduction, and opening a new Star door have all been disabled. Actions that would normally prompt the player to save no longer do so, but the game instead automatically saves itself.

Custom Mechanics[]

The game introduces positive and negative patches into the vanilla gameplay with various effects, that vary from changing Mario's appearance to adding new mechanics.

Every patch has:

  • Expiration: A period of time after which patch expires and disappears. The patch can expire after a specific amount of stars has been collected (already collected stars also count), a specific amount of patch uses or be completely permanent.
  • Rank: An indicator, marked as blue, yellow and purple crystals respectively, that shows how impactful are patches to the gameplay (e.g. cosmetic patches are marked as one blue crystal, while the patches that add a new mechanics marked as three purple crystals).

Note that patches with opposite effects will neutralize one other.

After collecting a star, key or pressing a switch, the player will find themselfes in the "Select Patch" menu. Here, the player needs to choose between two patch cards containing a positive and negative patches each. The cards will have their patch's highest rank. At random, the cards could contain higher positive patches ("Lucky!"), higher negative patches ("Bad Luck!") or negative patches only ("Chaos!").

In the file select menu, the player can choose the game's difficulty:

  • Easy: Patch cards will be more favorable. Cards will feature weaker negative effects.
  • Normal: Patch cards will be evenly balanced. Cards will have equal positive and negative effects.
  • Hard: Patch cards will be more punishing and longer. Cards will feature weaker positive effects.

The player can also choose the gamemodes:

  • Classic: Infinite lives. Dying will send the player out of the course without additional punishment.
  • Challenge: Enables lives. Running out of lives will delete the save file. 1-UP mushrooms are removed, and lives can only be increased by collecting yellow stars.

Pressing Z in the file select menu or START in the patch select menu opens a tutorial regarding the game modes and patches.
