Super Mario Apocalypse is a ROM hack made by Loudermonkeyboy. It was released in December 2018 and contains 92 Stars.
In December 2021, a full remake of the same name, created by Mariocrash, has been released 3 years later prior to this game.
Plot[]
The plot involves the Mushroom Kingdom collapsing in ruins after Mario died while fighting against Bowser in their ultimate battle. Eventually, Bowser ruled over the kingdom with no one able to stop his evil tyranny.
Meanwhile, a ghost that rises from Mario's tomb is seeking revenge and tries to foil Bowser's plan once more.
Will Mario, despite his lifeless form, be able to bring peace back in the Mushroom Kingdom?
Levels[]
Name | Stars | Coins | Requirement | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
The Town Remains | 7 | 169 | 1 Star | Can be only entered after collecting the Star in the "Destroyed Switch Facility" stage. |
Land of the Past | 149 | 5 Stars | ||
Lost Islands | 7 | 713 | 10 Stars | According to the sign, this level has the most superfluous amount of coins you can gather in the game. |
Endless Sky | 137 | 20 Stars | According to the sign, this course may cause the game to freeze/make bosses' Stars to spawn out of bounds so it's been advised to reset the game anytime from there. It also has a secret entrance in the first overworld only reserved for Star 6. Megamix Galaxy is inside this course. | |
Snow-Swept Station | 7 | 218 | Key 1 | According to the sign, this course is supposed to be Course 4 as Endless Sky was swapped with it. Star 6 is mission-specific, requiring to enter from an alternate entrance. |
Virtual Surreality | 215 | The Hall of the Stars is inside this course. | ||
The Nightmare Realm | 88 | Star 7 is a hidden secret Star as this level has lesser than 100 coins. | ||
The Great Maze | 21 | 363 (from all stages) | The Great Maze is a collection of 7 bonus stages after defeating Bowser the first time. It can only be accessed once the cannon is open after the final fight. |
Secret Levels[]
Name | Stars | Coins | Requirement | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
The Destroyed Switch Facility | 1 | 0 | This level is the game introduction, which includes all 3 cap switches. | |
Big House in the Sky | 2 | 57 | According to the sign, there is a hidden 3rd Star which is technically not in the level but from another course. | |
Bowser's Secret Rave | 1 | 148 | 30 Stars | The first Bowser course. |
Megamix Galaxy | 196 | 40 Stars | Can be entered from Endless Sky. The hidden course "Remixed Purple Coins" is inside this course. Also has a secret passageway to a Star in Snow-Swept Station. | |
Remixed Purple Coins | 200 | Can be entered from Megamix Galaxy. This level is based on the mission "Luigi's Purple Coins" in Toy Time Galaxy from Super Mario Galaxy, although the overall design is based on "Mario Meets Mario" in the same style. | ||
The Hall of the Stars | 6 | 50 Stars | Can be entered from Virtual Surreality. | |
Bowser's Supermax Prison | 1 | 50 | The second Bowser course. To reach the boss, it is needed to collect all 5 keys scattered throughout the level and get the Star. | |
The Dark Obelisk | 2 | 55 Stars | The third Bowser course. This level has 2 paths: the first leading straight to Bowser; the other to the most hardest Star ever made. However, it is been said that upon engaging Bowser in battle causes the game sound to glitch until a reset is executed. | |
The Breach | 1 | 90 Stars (red crystal only) | This level plays as the crossroads between the 3 overworlds, the Grand Finale and later after the final Bowser fight. The latter takes to a room where you can pick the blue crystal door to unlock the cannon in the Great Maze, whereas the red crystal door is only unlockable after collecting all 90 Stars. | |
The Grand Finale | 200 | 91 Stars | The final course of the game, only after collecting all 91 Stars. It is based on the mission "The Star Festival" in Super Mario Galaxy, within the layouts of the castle grounds area from Super Mario 64. |
Overworld[]
Area | Notes |

Overworld 1 | There are 2 hidden Stars: one on a tomb in the cemetary, and a Toad behind the alternate entrance of Course 4. |
Overworld 2 | There are 2 hidden Stars: one from red coins (some are inside the rooms requiring 40 Stars), and MIPS that can only be found from a secret warp from the "Big House in the Sky" stage. |

Trivia[]
- There is technically a 93rd Star unintentionally hidden by mistake in the Great Maze and this is the collectable 100 coins scattered in the Town section. It can be used as a substitute to replace the Dark Obelisk Star due to his high-level difficulty.
- This game has multiple skips and sequence breaks; notably one secret warp that takes to the Bowser fight and eventually the Great Maze from the early beginning.
- The remake was created after the technical issues made from the boss fights and the final boss. Things can be also said about the Great Maze and Bowser levels being obnoxious with their designs and navigation.
