Super Mario Apocalypse: Green Salvation is a major ROM hack created by Mariocrash. It is the green comet extension of the 2021 remake of the same name, using the same level assets and features 80 new green Stars and challenges. The hack follows the same timeline as a new story involves that Bowser is defeated by Mario and a green comet has surged over the land.
Plot[]
Welcome back to the Apocalypse.
The world's still in ruins so the land is just as dangerous as ever, but ever since Bowser's defeat at the hands of a newly resurrected Mario, there hasn't been an active threat. And in the years since, society's gradually been putting itself back together. It's not perfect but most citizens are content and accepting of this new normal. (Although they can't help but wonder if there was anything else that could have been done.)
Now, a Green Comet has appeared over this land sending Green Stars to every world. This event got the attention of Mario, prompting him to return to public view for the first time in many years.
Maybe the Green Comet made him feel nostalgic about his old Star collecting adventures. Or maybe they hold the key to something far greater. Well, there's only one way to find out...
Levels[]
In contrast to regular green Star hacks, the main levels each don't have all 7 Stars.
Name | Stars | Notes |
---|---|---|
The Town Remains | 5 | |
Land of the Past | 6 | |
Lost Islands | 5 | The map of the island shows the location of each green Stars. |
Endless Sky | 5 | A green Star is located in the cyclone area. |
Snow-Swept Station | 6 | Almost all green Stars are located outside the town, including two in the mountain hideout. |
Virtual Surreality | 5 | |
The Nightmare Realm | 5 | |
Hall of the Stars | 6 |
Secret Levels[]
Name | Stars | Notes |
---|---|---|
The Destroyed Switch Facility | 4 | One green Star is located in each respective cap switch area. |
Big House in the Sky | 4 | |
Megamix Galaxy | 4 | Two green Stars are in the main section while the other two are inside both Toy Time 8-bit sections. |
Fortress of Infinity | 4 | The first exclusive extra stage accessible from Virtual Surreality. Unlike before, this level has checkpoints. |
Bright Brutality | 4 | The second extra stage accessible from the third overworld. |
Bowser's Secret Rave | 4 | The first Bowser level. It has a green Star in the key fight stage. |
Bowser's Supermax Prison | 2 | The second Bowser level. It has two green Stars in the key fight stage, which the latter takes the player back to the return pipe on the prison's rooftop. |
Bowser's Dark Obelisk | 3 | The third Bowser level. The fight area is not involved as it's sealed off. One green Stars is located in the obelisk's outdoors and two more green Stars are indoors. |
The Breach | This area acts as a bridge between the 3 overworlds and the Grand Chase. Likewise, it's where the game Starts as the 80-Star barrier is sealed in there. | |
The Grand Chase | 1 | The ending area of the game, accessible after collecting all 80 Stars. It's the same mission as "The Grand Finale", except this time a green demon (in the shape of a mangled Mario) will chase the player around. If the green demon hits Mario, he will immediately lose a life. Collecting the green Star does not increase the counter but sends the player to the end game. |
Miscellaneous[]
Overworld green Stars have a special condition to save the game. Additionally, The Great Maze doesn't return in this hack while a new level replaces it over its location.
Area | Stars | Notes |
---|---|---|
Post-Apocalypse | 2 | Green Star 1 is located over the wall and Green Star 2 is located airborne above the Town Remains entrance. |
Ante-Apocalypse | Green Star 1 is located on top of Endless Sky's tower entrance (reachable via Big House's secret exit) and Green Star 2 is located inside one of the 3 pipe drains. | |
Bowser's Kingdom | Star 1 is located at a corner above the overworld while airborne and Star 2 is located in the Great Maze entrance room. | |
Save Point | This small area contains a Star that acts as a save point due to a "technical bug". However, the Star itself doesn't increment to the counter. | |
Illuminary Obliteration | 1 | The new secret ending level unlockable at 80 Stars which replaces the Great Maze. This is actually a flipped out and buffed version of Dark Obelisk. Collecting the green Star does not increase the counter but sends the player to the end game. |
Music[]
The soundtrack is the same as the remake except for the rave tunes, the Grand FInale and the secret ending level. Most music ports are composed by EDark and sm64pie, other various ports are by Mosky2000, ShrooboidBrat and many others.

Trivia[]
- Actually, Illuminary Obliteration can be accessed without entering The Grand Chase since it is unlocked at 80 Stars.
- The rooftop sign of Supermax Prison states that the skybox is different from the main game, as the key fight area is actually a subarea of the level. The Secret Rave shares that same effect.
- At the very end of the secret ending, the unknown area foreshadows the sequel of Apocalypse, called Super Mario: Journey to Infinity. It is the same area shown in the trailer video.
