Super Mario 64 Hacks Wiki

Super Mario Apocalypse (2021) is a major ROM hack created by Mariocrash, which is a remake of LouderMonkeyBoy's original hack released in December 2018. Featuring a total of 100 Stars, all the game's elements and levels are exact duplicates designed with better visual improvements and quality of life changes, as well as custom assets and 2 new exclusive levels.

A 80-Star green comet extension called Green Salvation was released the following year. This hack serves as a side-sequel to the main game.

Plot[]

"I failed you all... this world is done for... and... I... am no longer alive... anymore..."

In an alternate timeline, the Mushroom Kingdom has fallen in disaster after Mario was killed in action against Bowser. Eventually, Bowser has since ruled over the kingdom with no one able to stop his evil tyranny. However, Mario's lifeless body arises from his tomb and is now a ghost. By learning from his mistakes, he is seeking revenge and tries to foil Bowser's evil plan.

Will Mario be able to save the Mushroom Kingdom in time, or, fail once more?

Levels[]

Name Stars Coins Requirement Notes
The Town Remains 7 154 1 Star Can be only entered after completing the "Destroyed Switch Facility" stage.
Land of the Past 70 5 Stars Star 7 is a hidden secret Star as secrets represented by coin graffitis around the level.
Lost Islands 313 Just like the original, this level has the most superfluous amount of coins, though the total is 2/8 short on coins.
Endless Sky 168 20 Stars A secret entrance to the level (reserved for Star 6) can be found in the first overworld. Megamix Galaxy is hidden inside this course.
Snow-Swept Station 192 According to the sign, this course is supposed to be Course 4 as Endless Sky was swapped with it, which was again intended as a joke.
Virtual Surreality 72 Key 1 Star 7 is a hidden secret Star as this level has lesser than 100 coins. Fortress of Infinity is hidden inside this course.
The Nightmare Realm 84 Star 7 is a hidden secret Star as this level has lesser than 100 coins.
Hall of the Stars 70 Unlike the original, this level is now a main course and is accessible from a secret passage in the third overworld. Star 7 is a hidden secret Star as this level has lesser than 100 coins.

Secret Levels[]

Name Stars Requirement Notes
The Destroyed Switch Facility 1 This level is the game introduction including all 3 cap switches.
Big House in the Sky 2 According to the sign, there is a hidden 3rd Star which is technically not in the level but from MIPS in the second overworld.
Megamix Galaxy 3 40 Stars This level is accessible from Endless Sky. This level is a recreation of Super Mario Galaxy with 2 secret Stars based on missions from Toy Time Galaxy. Also it has a secret warp to a Star in Snow-Swept Station.
Fortress of Infinity 1 60 Stars The first exclusive level accessible from Virtual Surreality. This level doesn't take the player out of the level until the Star is collected. Latest version has this level updated to be less difficult by including checkpoints.
Bright Brutality Key 1 The second exclusive level accessible from the third overworld. This level is a throwback of Bob-omb Battlefield, redesigned to be desolate and dangerous. This level doesn't take the player back to the overworld until the Star is collected. Latest version has this level updated to be less difficult.
Bowser's Secret Rave 30 Stars The first Bowser level. Its Star will not take the player outside the level.
Bowser's Supermax Prison 50 Stars The second Bowser level. The level objective is different compared to the original: to reach the boss, it is needed to press the gate switch and escape the prison. Keys are still present as the sole Star but will not take the player outside the level.
Bowser's Dark Obelisk Key 2 The third Bowser level. This level has 2 paths: the first leading straight to Bowser; the second to the most hardest challenging Star.
The Breach 10 Stars This area acts as a bridge between the 3 overworlds, the Grand Finale and the Bowser fight. The latter takes the player to a room where it can choose the blue crystal door to unlock the cannon in the Great Maze, whereas the red crystal door is only open with all 98 Stars.
The Grand Finale 99 Stars The ending area of the game, accessible after collecting all 99 Stars. It is based on the mission "The Star Festival" in Super Mario Galaxy, with similar features from Super Mario 64's Castle Grounds.

Miscellaneous[]

Area Stars Notes
Post-Apocalypse 2 One Star is held on a tomb in the cemetary (represented by a sparkling sprite), and another Star held by a Toad behind the alternate entrance of Course 4.
Ante-Apocalypse One Star can be collected by gathering the red coins, and the other is held by MIPS on the unreachable floating island in the sky.
Bowser's Kingdom Up top of Bowser's Tower lies a hidden Star and the other is held by LouderMonkeyBoy, the creator in his Toad form, inside his game house.

Trivia[]

  • Fortress of Infinity is intended as part of the remake but was originally conceived between this game and the next MonkeyBoy hack "Journey to Infinity" as a timeline connection.
  • Bright Brutality is a level originated from another Mariocrash hack: Brutal Mario 64 (Lost Battlefield). It's redesigned with minor changes to be fair in its challenges.
  • Just like the original game, it can be finished as early for any%, notably using the secret warp that takes to the Bowser fight and Start eventually the Great Maze from the beginning.
