Super Mario 64 Hacks Wiki

Super Mario Cyclone Fighter is a ROM hack made by TheGael95. It is a linear-style hack where it plays as a side-scroller in the style of Super Mario 3D Land/3D World with a total of nine full-scale levels. The main missions are advancing through the levels from start to finish and defeat tough bosses, while collecting stars which are spread across each level.

It also includes warp zones, made in convienience in order to skip over tough sections, bonus areas to win coins and extra lives, and a level select map that is later unlockable post-game. Furthermore, one item in particular was customized in this hack: the Rainbow Star. It is the equivalent of the Metal Cap and emulates as is (a star model replaces the cap model), to defeat enemies and stay immune to fire attacks and pools of lava.

aglab2, one of the remake contributors, released a new version (v2.0), which fixes a couple bugs and adds new gameplay features such as a checkpoint system (later to be featured in Ztar Attack 2), as well as introducing special level contents and a new cap ability: the Quicksand Cap.

Plot[]

Unnatural storms are plaguing the Mushroom Kingdom, and it's up to Mario to find the cause, and stop it at all costs.

Levels[]

Each act is comprised of 3 levels and ends with a boss fight. Difficulty and length vary between the levels. In version 2.0, extra stars were added to act as checkpoints; every time Mario grabs a star and loses a life no matter where he stands, he will respawn next the current star until the farthest one at the end of the level.

Act 1: The Calm Before the Storm[]

Level Name Stars Notes
C1 Windy Grassy Path 4 Freezing Beach can be found inside this level, all the way to the ending section and from above.
C2 Fiery Alps 5
C3 Thermic Shock Caverns 7 The Rainbow Star Switch can be found inside this level. There is also a hidden Warp Zone alongside the switch, skipping directly to Level 6.
B1 VS. Negative Whomp 1

Act 2: Weathering Skies[]

Level Name Stars Notes
C4 Frozen Cina Summits 6 A hidden Warp Zone is inside this level, it skips directly to Level 7.
C5 Way to the Skies 4 A hidden Warp Zone is inside this level, it skips directly to Level 8.
C6 Floating Temple The Wing Cap Switch can be found inside this level.
B2 VS. Cloud King A hidden Warp Zone is inside this level, it skips directly to Level 9.

Act 3: To Where It All Gusts Stronger[]

Level Name Stars Notes
C7 Airborne Hamlet 4
C8 Stormy Sky 5
C9 Endless Ghost Tower 4
B3 VS. Spirit of the Storms This is the final boss stage, and is the most hardest to clear due to low visibility.

Extra Challenges[]

These original levels were added in v2.0 to replace the auto-scrolling/elevator ride sections in the older version.

Area Description
Underground Cap Challenge A cavernous obstacle course where Mario scavenge through with the help of red/blue switches to unlock a door.
Flying Fortress Wing Cap Challenge An athletic, airborne sprint where Mario has to scour across slick rooftops and windy paths.
Sand Palace Vanish Challenge This area introduces the Quicksand Cap, a new power-up (matches with the Vanish Cap) where Mario is able to walk on quicksand for a brief period.

Miscellaneous[]

Area Stars Description
Ice & Wind Corridor 4 Both areas are safe zones after defeating a act boss. They also hold a hidden warp zone to skip a level (Wind Corridor is exclusive in v2.0).
Level Select Room 1 This area is unlockable after collecting all 20 stars. This area is replaced by the Warps Configuration (it still exists in v2.0 if warped via Star Display).
Freezing Beach This extra stage serves as a hidden secret bonus to the game. Winning the race against Koopa the Quick earns Mario a star and sends him straight to the ending. It is unlockable at 21 stars.
Shortcut Tunnel 2 This area serves as an alternate warp zone but with Wing and Rainbow Star Caps if their respective switch is activated. If both cap switches are activated, Mario can skip certain levels to Level 3 and/or Level 6. Otherwise, he'll have to do the path from square one.
Warps Configuration Exclusive in v2.0, this sets the parameters to the checkpoint star system and how they function regardless of the mode selected.
  • Normal Mode = Mario will start the level the regular way (same for warp zones, if found a shortcut warp pipe)
  • No Warp Zones = Mario will start at the beginning the level despite entering via a warp zone.
  • Closest Warp = Mario will start from a star located anywhere that he encounters in a level (being the first he collects).
  • Furthest Warp = Mario will start from the star by the end of the level (being the first he collects).

Trivia[]

  • Later in the game, a sign in the Level Select Room is giving hints about the warp zones with sentences written backwards, if ordered properly, this roughly translates to: " The first is inside the ice cavern (Thermic Shock Caverns), the second is in the forgotten castle (Frozen Cina Summits), the third is on the way to the temple (Way to the Skies), and the fourth is near the white king (VS. Cloud King)."
  • The Negative Mirror, as well as King Toadley's Castle is part of the Ztar Attack timeline, it is linked to the Negative Realm which was later foreseen in Ztar Attack/Rebooted, Ztar Attack 2 and (probably) Ztar Attack 3.
  • The Quicksand Cap, is a new item programmed by aglab2, until it was reused much later in King Boo's Revenge X. The extra Cap Challenges, however, later made a return (minus the Vanish Cap course) into one of aglab2's projects: Another Mario Adventure.
