Super Mario and the Dark Star Hunt is a ROM hack created by finall0ss, as a successor to SM64 Darkness.
Gameplay[]
Fall damage has been disabled, and dying in a level now warps Mario back to the level's starting point without coins being lost. Mario's lives counter has also been disabled.
This hack is non-stop, meaning that collecting any of the Stars will not initiate a warp. This also means that there is only one active Act for each course, and there is no Act select screen.
Areas[]
Area ID | Name | Stars | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
C1 | Let's A Go! | 7 | This level contains at least 246 coins. Star 5 is obtained by standing on one of the "?" blocks on the ground near Mario's starting point; this will initiate a hidden warp. This is hinted at by the signpost near Mario's starting point and the Bob-omb Buddy at the top of the wallkicking section. |
C2 | Mario Time! | 7 | This level contains at least 141 coins. |
C3 | Mama Mia! | 7 | This level has two sub-areas, and at least 163 coins. |
B3 | Here We Go! | 2 | Requires 28 Stars to enter. |
OW | Overworld | 7 |
Known Issues[]
smdsh_softlock fix version:[]
- It is possible for the game to softlock after collecting a Star, however, this happens immediately after selecting the option to save, but can be avoided by choosing to not save (unconfirmed theory). It is possible to know when a crash may be imminent by the appearance of the dialogue box- if it does its usual spin-appear animation, there's no risk of crashing. But if the dialogue box appears without any animation, then a crash could be imminent- it is not a guarantee. Note that this bug with the dialogue boxes not using the correct animation sequence for appearing can happen with NPCs as well, but there does not seem to be a risk of crashing.
- Dying in water will cause the camera to become buggy after respawning. This can be fixed by warping to a different area.
- There are two cubes beyond the edge of the level in C2, likely left over from the level being modelled. This isn't actually an issue, it's just funny.
