The Dark World is a collaborative hack made by BoomerDaCat and furyiousfight for the Dream Themed Level Competition, in which it placed 3rd.

Mario falls into a new parallel world, with familiar and unfamiliar friends. NOTE: this hack requires framebuffer emulation to be OFF

This hack is a turn-based RPG style game with a morals system dictating how much damage the player can inflict. There are multiple endings to available, and they are decided based on the player's choices in battles. Furthermore, the choices made in battles influence what kind of challenge will be presented to the player at the end of each turn.

Mario's traditional health circle has been replaced- instead, all three characters in his party have their own HP stat of varying sizes. The easiest way to replenish the party's HP is by approaching one of the many sparkling objects throughout the city, clicking B and becoming "filled with determination" (healed). Each character has at least one way of replenishing HP during battle, but most battles do not last long enough to warrant using up a turn on healing.

Plot[]

The Toads at the local library have called for Mario's help in handling a rather delicate matter. Upon arriving, they inform Mario that while they are okay with Bowser using the library to read (even though they are still quite afraid of him), they are not okay with Bowser committing the greatest sin of all- not having a library card. Mario politely informs Bowser of the Toads' demand, who then heads downstairs to reception to resolve this issue.

After following Bowser downstairs, Mario is greeted by a very different room to the one he left behind. There is no sign Bowser or the Toads; the lights have gone out and left the reception in a shadowy purple haze, and worst of all, the computer lab is open for business. The entrance to the lab is pitch black and glowing with an eerie purple energy. Entering it will lead to Mario falling a great distance into the void below, only to wake up in The Dark World.

Trivia[]

  • This hack was heavily inspired by the games Undertale and Deltarune, made by Toby Fox.
  • The Thwomp Car models are rips from Mario Party 2.
  • Mario does not need to speak with Bowser and Gulii for them to join his team. If he ignores them, they will still appear behind him and follow him after warping to the next area.
  • By wall-kicking up between certain buildings, it is possible to bypass the barriers preventing the player from jumping onto certain rooftops. This trick can be used to skip fighting Fawful and warp straight to the ending.
  • The UI is completely absent in this hack.
  • Bowser wags his tail as he walks.
