The Hole to Hyrule is a ROM hack created by Cheezepin, HeroTechne, and Technomancer00 for the Zelda Hack Competition, in which it placed 3rd.
Gameplay[]
This hack has a dungeon-crawler style of gameplay to it, similar to games in The Legend of Zelda franchise. As Mario progresses, he will find various items that he can use to solve puzzles and take down enemies. Items and other information can be viewed and altered using the pause menu.
In the pause menu, the player can equip items by hovering over them and pressing any of the four D-Pad buttons. This will then assign that item to that D-Pad button, and it will appear in the upper-right corner of the HUD. Exact usage varies between each item, but pressing the corresponding D-Pad button will either summon that item (e.g, a bomb, or the boomerang), or equip that item to Mario and take the place of another function. For example. the Fire Rod is equipped by pressing its assigned D-Pad button; this is turn makes it appear in Mario's right hand, and is used with the B button. Mario's attacks aside from the fireball are otherwise unaffected; he can still kick and dive, etcetera.
Fall damage has been disabled, and the standard SM64 save function has been replaced. Rather than giving the player the option to save after collecting a Star, this hack has "save blocks" placed periodically throughout its areas. A save can be initiated by punching the save block from underneath, which will then sound the recovery heart sound effect.
