Toad is the name of a character belonging to a species of the same name, and is one of the protectors of the Mushroom Kingdom. Toad originally appeared in Super Mario Bros. and since then has become a staple of the Super Mario universe.

Toads, also known as the Mushroom People or simply Mushrooms, are mushroom-like humanoid characters and inhabitants of the Mushroom Kingdom. They can usually be spoken to by Mario, offering advice, information about a level, or most commonly, exposition for the story.
