Underwater Castle is the third course in Super Mario 64 - Twisted Adventures. This course is an expansive underwater castle that has a linear layout.
Stars[]
In this level, Mario starts outside of the castle, just like in the last main course. There is a sign that explains which camera to use depending on if you are in water or on land, and that a Metal Cap is required to get at least two of the Stars. after reading the sign, you will see a block with a Metal Cap on it.
Act 1: Exploring The Castle[]
For now, ignore the Metal Cap box and swim downwards into a large room. The only way to progress forward is to swim to the far side of this room, and then swim up through the opening that leads to the next room.
Next, swim through a circular opening in the wall that is surrounded by coins. This leads to another large room that has two paths leading away. For this particular Star, swim downwards and hug the ground until you come up to a left turn. This path leads to a huge room which has the Star out in the open. Simply swim over to it and you will have your Star.
Act 2: Five Secret Coins[]
For this Star, Mario must discover five Secrets marked by coins. Luckily, these coins are usually not accompanied with any other coins, making them easy to spot.
The first Secret can be found in the large swimming room closest to Mario's starting point, in front of the closest wall. After discovering this Secret, swim out of the first room as described in the previous Star's guide, and swim to the next big room. In this room, look for an alcove on the wall and swim to it to find the second Secret.
Next, head towards the final room- but as you are swimming towards it, look up and you will notice there is room above you can enter. Swim up to the singular coin above, which marks the third Secret.
Swim back down and into the huge room and you will see a coin just floating about, which marks the fourth Secret. Finally, swim all the way back through the circular opening in the wall and you will see the fifth Secret straight ahead, under the surface.
The Star will spawn nearby, in the back of the first room.
Act 3: Scary Metal Blocks Of Failure[]
Once more, swim all the way back to the huge room that had the first Star. Swim to the very back of the room and hop onto a block. From this block, longjump to another block that has a Metal Cap on it. Grab the Metal Cap and jump back into the water.
What you must do here is hit the switch to create boxes that lead to the Star. However, it is not that simple, as hitting the switch as Metal Mario would not allow him to swim back up quickly enough. What you must do is wait until the Metal Cap is about to run out, and then hit the switch to get the maximum amount of time to jump across the boxes.
Once you have hit the switch, quickly swim back to the first block and then jump back to the other block. From here, there are three boxes that have spawned from the purple switch. You can jump on them with either longjumps or jump-kicks.
After that, there is a bunch of regular blocks that need to be jumped onto to reach the Star. You can handle these boxes the same as the last ones, with longjumps or jump-kicks. Once you have made it, jump on top of the first box and break the second box above, as it holds the Star.
This Star's name and idea most likely are referencing a Star from course 10 of Super Mario 74, titled “Scary Blocks Of Failure”.
Act 4: Red Underwater Treasure[]
The red coin Star in this course is not so difficult to get as many of the red coins are in the first underwater room. If you are getting the 100 Coins Star at the same time, it may be a good idea to be strategic with the coins you grab. If you were to grab all the coins in one area at a time, you may end up drowning later as you need to travel a long distance with no source of health.
The red coin locations are as follows:
- Straight ahead when you swim down near the closest wall.
- On the left side of the alcove that had the secret coin in it.
- In the final room right next to where the first Star was.
- On the left side of the path to the final room (hard to miss)
- Above that same path in the alcove where the secret coin was.
- In the bottom corner at the back of the first room.
- In a alcove to the side of the first room.
- In another alcove on the back wall.
The Star will appear outside, near Mario's starting point for the course.
Act 5: Secret Sandy Room[]
Star 5 takes Mario to a sandy room that has an aesthetic and tricky platforming similar to that of the previous course. To find this room, make your way over to the second large underwater area and swim upwards where you see a hole in the ceiling. Jump up and you have entered the secret sandy room.
In this room there is a sign that explains where to get the Star. Start the obstacle course by jumping on the spiral platform that has a 1-Up on it. Straight ahead, there are some very small triangular platforms that are reminiscent of the platforms that were in the Sandy Castle. Just like in Sandy castle, these triangular platforms can be dealt with by using the jump kick.
After this, there is a larger triangular platform that extends outwards toward to a vantage point where you can jump to more small platforms. The three platforms here can be reached with a simple jump and are not too dfifficult to climb. Next to these platforms is a pillar that can be reached with a ledge grab.
After that, jump to yet another triangular platform that holds a Koopa shell. This shell is necessary for getting to the area on the left where the Star is. Ride the shell into you reach the stairs which lead to the Star.
Act 6: The Star In The Corner[]
Finally, it is time to grab the Metal Cap that is sitting at the beginning of the level. Grab the Metal Cap from the block and jump into the water. Just like in Star 3, you have to wait until the last second to hit the purple switch, when the Metal Cap is about to run out. When you do so, hit the switch and then swim back up to the first block.
There are several blocks that are spawned that can be jumped up to. Jump past all these blocks until you reach a ledge where you will have your Star.
